RE: [hlds_linux] server ip = domain help

2004-01-31 Thread rodrigo.be
1st you have to register a domain name. (www.netsol.com)
Then you have to have nameserver for that server (www.mydomain.com)
When you have the nameservers you have to add a A-record to your ip.
So that if you do a nslookup
(http://dc.qut.edu.au/cgi-bin/man/man2html?nslookup)
You will get

testserver.myserver.com A 55.555.55.555

That way you forward a domain name to an ip address

If this is what you mean

Hello, can someone please tell me step by step on how to have a server IP as
a domain. Like 55.555.55.555 would go to testserver.myserver.com.

Re: [hlds_linux] server performance improvement

2004-01-31 Thread Matthew Donnon
Hi Alfred,
about ram access - changing from a single data rate 66mhz systems like your
p2-333, to any current system which is likely to be running 266 to 400 mhz
double data rate (probably dual channel as well) the ram bandwidth may not
be as a large a problem as on the old p2 ;-).
Your test bed has an theoretical ram bandwidth of a few hundred megabytes
per second, current systems calculate that in multiple gigabytes per sec.

Regardless of this, many thanks for the efforts that you have provided.

Matt

RE: [hlds_linux] server performance improvement

2004-01-31 Thread Alfred Reynolds
The test server on 207.173.176.204 is currently running a few CPU
optimizations that seem to have a reasonable impact on performance (the
PII 333Mhz machine we are testing on can now run 12 players on aztec at
about 75% CPU load (peaking to 99%, but not lagging out players)). We
hope to release these optimizations in the next week or two (on the
usual Wednesday release day).

Another bottleneck is RAM access. Anything you can do to the machine to
increase memory bandwidth (or decrease latency) will help.

What hard drive se up do you have
I have found running 3 server on the one box caused lag for all three
servers after a map change on eather one of the servers caused by Hard
drive assces speeds to slow
Im going to look at going to free bsd because it has a ram drive built
into the kernal

2004-01-31 Thread raoul bhatia
basically, i've got nothing on this box besides sshd, apache, ftp and
the gameservers. apache and ftp are reserved for the web interface and
upload to the maps directory. so there is no load coming from these two
daemons.
the kernel is a 2.4.24-ck1 with mdraid and lvm.

i'll try a 2.6.x kernel as soon as possible. thank you for your help!
