RE: [hlds_linux] Crash all CS:S Clients connected to a server

2004-10-16 Thread Marco
Is there a way for realtime logging? It seems the CS:S server has a log
buffer. If I do a cat *.log | grep % I can ban the ips of people with a
% in the name. But the time CS:S takes to write down the log is enough for
other people to use this "%" bug.

To make it short, you see anyone with "%n" anywhere in their nickname,
IP and steamid ban them permanently and as fast as your fingers can type
- if they get an opportunity to die or suicide you'll crash out along
with the rest of your server.

I would hate to see how insecure the rest of the code is if they haven't
even put basic sanity checking on the usernames.
Meant to add:
Or using unknown strings in a way that could be detrimental to the system.

Not sure if this is server side problem or client side problem
however, it
appears that whenever de_piransi loads it crashes all the clients
connected to my server. It appears to affect others as well. People can
then rejoin and play the map but they have to reload hl2.
The other possibility is it could also be de_dust2 -> any_map because I
have tested in depth other then the mapcycle order and a few observed
incidents.
Anyone else noticed problems like this ?

I had major issues last week with people actually exploiting that and
causing one of my machines to reboot each time. Very frustrating.
The patch last week fixed it though, or maybe no one's exploited it
since.. But it's a serious problem if the bug is still there.

Re: [hlds_linux] Dual CPU Usage?

2004-10-16 Thread Ian mu
I'd probably say if you are running 2 or more game processes (or other
reasonably weighty apps) I'd get a dual processor system, if 3 or more
I'd personally go for a hyperthreaded system. Some other setups maybe
be a bit better "value" wise though.

I think care needs to be taken when looking at cpu usage on
hyperthreaded CPUs as some distros seem to report it differently, the
benefits of hyperthreading are there when running multiple processes,
but you don't actually "have" 4 CPUs so you might think you have more
spare cpu power than you really have (and naturally there are other
limitations as well, but overall its still a good setup).

Definitely helps, and I'd go with a dual xeon setup, just be wary with
what you see and think capable of :).
