Are you sure about that? Cause i run 6 CS:S servers, and only one, the
cs_office only, is crashing. The others run without problems, as far as i
have detected. And it's not binary related either. We run both Intel and AMD
procs. This particular server is running on an Intel proc, but the other
server on that proc don't crash (as far as i have seen).

There is no beta currently. The release yesterday (which made what was
the beta into a public release) did include changes that lowered CPU
usage on all platforms (so yes, Linux servers).

2006-03-09 Thread FiRe

Indeed, I used to use Mani, SteamBans, and EventScripts, this has been
cut down to just Mani now, but this bug even happens without Mnia, It's
definately a Linux SRCDS bug, both my machines are AMD, one an X2 3800+,
and one XP 3000+. I'm not sure if it's AMD sepcific, but could you,
Alfred, have a look into this bug?

Thanks, FiRe.

In addition to my own reply:

It's also not a SteamBans plugin issue. I killed the plugin this evening,
and the server just hung again a few mins ago. So it must be SRCDS related.
One more for the buglist, Alfred :) I'll see if i can catch any more info if

2006-03-09 Thread Matt Judge

I apologise for making it public, I didn't realise that it was for my
consumption only.

Given the briefness of your reply, it was pretty much open to
interpretation. There was no mention that you were doing anything to
remedy the situation. Had you said, "do not use renice for now, we are
working on a solution", or something to that effect, you would have made
your position clearer.

Thanks for your efforts,

Matt.

Re: Re: [hlds_linux] cpu usage>90% since last update (with nice -10)

2006-03-09 Thread W0kk3L

If you want to run good servers, you have to anticipate in what's coming...

We also run full servers 24/7 (aprox 200 of the max 220 CS slots are filled
every day), but to continue the service we have to know what is in the
market. I try new releases all the time. Running the swapbeta, running
metamod beta or amxmodx beta. And if one crashes, or gives problems, i just
roll back to the previous release. I rather see persons being kicked for a
short time on an evening, then seeing all our server crash because i
'forgot' to verify if the release worked. You won't loose players over that,
trust me :)

And Alfred, keep up the good work. You and your teammates :)

-W0kk3L-

PS. Alfred, did you check those demos i send you a while ago? About that
roof-boosting-bug?

Alfred thanks for the answer on the usage.

Fair comment I did see the beta in here and considered it many times,
but our main server is full 24/7 and we generally aren't in the position
of stopping / starting and taking downtime and new issues to test out
beta servers. It will eventually lose us players and we take great pride
in the number of players we entertain with our DOD:S Server in
particular.

I don't want to sound selfish and ungrateful, but I'm not a Valve beta
tester & don't feel I'm obliged to be one either, with respect that's
your job , not mine, I expect a tested working software version on a
plate :-). Realise it's a 2 way street, but you need us as much as we
need you when it comes to running servers to sell your product / us
needing servers to play your product.

However I am realistic enough to realise someone's got to do it and why
shouldn't it be me. I guess we can all say I told you so when these
things happen after all :-)

But again we run a very very busy server ( was ranked no1 for nearly 3
months with Game Monitor) and I'd prefer it to be always full and full
of happy players, however I do understand you may think this is a little
hypocritical.

On another note, how do I get my message responses to appear in the same
tree / thread, every time I reply it starts a new one off .. have tried
with RE and without RE: , am using bog standard outlook to reply. Sorry
I've never really used mailing lists b4

Thanks again for your response.

The CPU usage change was to switch from a polling model for IPC
(inter-process communications, our threads talking to each other) to an
event driven model. This means that you only use CPU when you need to.
The job of the game server is to use as much CPU as possible to achieve
the tickrate and FPS values you give it. If you re-nice it above all
other processes then yes, it will use more CPU.

My question is, why the heck didn't you even try the beta? It had been
available for a couple months, the whole point of it was to catch and
solve issues before the public release (the number of different
hardware/software configurations out there for Linux means that no
amount of internal testing can ever get 100% coverage).

Neil wrote:

Thanks Gents, renicing was also the cause of our issues (I also made
the
steam forum post mentioned in previous posts)

But I still have a few questions for Alfred or Valve fellas.

So what if I feel renicing my processes helps the overall Game Server
performance on our priority DOD:S instance over other apps /
processes (
team speak, mysql etc )and other game servers on the box ?

Why should this cause an issue and we be forced to stay at zero
priority, surely this is still a bug with the server engine. I'm not
aware of any other app that destroys the boxes CPU when you drop
priority by just 1 point.

Also what exactly has this reduced in terms of CPU load / spikes etc,
because I genuinely believe the server is now taking up more CPU than
b4?

Roughly 10% more I'd say, I still have a backup of the previous server
files, will these still work ok if I want to compare?

Thanks for your time

Running on FC3 Amd X64.

So is this "CPU issue" not really an issue at all but because people are
giving it mega high priority and then wondering why it eats up CPU?

I renice my halflife processes too. I have done since 2000 and, it has
only been this latest release which is causing 100% hog of CPU usage.
As stated in a previous post, my server was running fine for a number of
maps, then, the server switched to 100% CPU usage and people were
getting astronomical pings. The fact this never happened before the
update, would suggest it is a problem with the update and not the way I
am running my server. The fix needs to be made in the update - not on
my server.

What I was thinking was that people are complaining that since the
patch, the server is now eating a lot more CPU than before...?

There are many reasons for renice'ing processes. The people who have
posted comments on this list clearly have no idea on Linux scheduling or
how it works. renice is not "sys_ticrate" or "tickrate" or
"pingboost". renice DOES NOT make a process use more CPU, it allows a
process to use the CPU more often and for longer. The subsequent load
on the CPU is dependant on what the process is doing, and not on the
'nice' value.

Having said all this, I suspect that the problem is with threading.
Child threads do not inherit the parent processes 'nice' value. A
possible fix would be to 'renice' the child processes as well (this
may or may not work).

Cheers,

Matt.

RE: [hlds_linux] cpu usage>90% since last update (with nice -10)

2006-03-09 Thread Alfred Reynolds

I have applied the update, now both our servers run for a few min fine and
then the cpu jumps to 99%. I have tried removing all the plugins and it
still does it.
As this is not the swapbeta version we cannot roll back so I now have a

Re: [hlds_linux] FAO Alfred, regarding hanging sevrer after map change

2006-03-09 Thread W0kk3L

This is indeed a bug that needs attention. It has been happening on regular
basis. It has nothing to do with mani, cause i don't run mani on any of the
servers.

I'm currently trying to run without the steambans plugin. I know the latest
version of the plugin has some bugs (but as far as i know, this is only
customcheck related). Is there someone who runs CS:S without the SB plugin,
and still having problems?

As far as i can tell, the bug is only happening with cs_office and de_aztec.
Not with other maps. I'm running 6 CS:S servers, and only the 'office only'
server is causing problems.

If you really give a process real time priority, the scheduler won't
give other processes any cpu time, until the real time process gives

Confirming what "issue"?

Don't renice the process. There's no need unless you're running extra stuff
as well, in which case simple nice positively the other app which is
running.

I.e on that article, there's no "problem" as such reported. If someone is
going to try and run 2x16 slot 100tick servers, they are going to be hitting
90% cpu I would guess whatever really. What may help "unless" its dual core,
is to enable ht, and using taskset force them both on the same cpu, so ht
can help with any extra housekeeping or other smaller apps. Might make it
worse though, but its an easy option to try for some that are trying to do
that.

Don't see the need to renice processes though. You have to think about all
the things you are making yourself a higher priority over, and often some of
them aren't good to prioritise over (purely imo).

In order to be able to change how the mapcycle function the plugin needs to
overload the changelevel command. It does not however know where the
'changelevel' command has been initiated from. As an alternative you can use
ma_map from hlsw which will change to the correct map.

[hlds_linux] bots stay dead

2006-03-09 Thread Gamefuel Support

Hi,
Just wanted to report a bug of minor importance..
On our server we use bots sometimes. We also use auto teambalancing. In
our case this is done through hlstatsx.
When hlstatsx swaps two bots to the opposite team, the bots remain dead
on round start. This means that after they are swapped to the opposite
team, they never spawn again.
Dont know if this is specific to auto balancing with hlstatsx. IIRC I
have seen this with "regular" teambalance also.
Is anyone else experiencing this also?
If needed I can provide an example server with proof of this behaviour.
Contact me off list if this is desired.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source and Half-Life 1 Dedicated server update released

2006-03-09 Thread Evaldas Zilinskas

Update is stable and works great on my Pentium. And... (it will sound
funny), but why don't you remove the engine part, where is the VALVE_ID_%u?
By deletind the part with where is the HLDS 1.1.1.x support, we will get
smaller engines and smaller possibility to crack the engine :).

Subject: [hlds_linux] Source and Half-Life 1 Dedicated server update
released

Updates to the Source and Half-Life 1 dedicated server have been
released. Run the hldsupdatetool to get this update.

This update makes public the "swapbeta" that has been running for a
while. This update is optional but HIGHLY recommended as it fixes the
steamid swapping bug seen on servers. This update also smoothes out some
spiky CPU usage seen on servers and fixes several crashes on Linux
distributions using older GLIBC versions.

[hlds_linux] Massive CPU Usage after update

2006-03-09 Thread Neil

Oh Crap , sorry didn't mean to include other posts in 1st post ..

-

Our DOD Source servers hit 100% CPU after a few minutes & cripple the
boxes, following todays update. This is with no players and absolutely
no plugins at all, i.e addons folder removed.

This really is not good
