Done the verify, checked all new files in the last month,

Still the same.

What server or servers do you retrieve the dynamic pricing from?
Is it from content servers or a specific server, only other thing i can
think of is pinging That server to see if the cs:s server can reach the
destination.

Search by file change date for the past 30 days

Delete them all, assuming you only see approximately 22 odd files which is
what I get.

Then do a: HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source"
-verify_all

Or at least thats how you do it for Windows. :)

Well I find it funny you even bothered to post that 1st link at all,
considering how old that Xeon (512MB of cache lol) you have used to attempt
to demonstrate your point. Were you hoping that nobody would actually bother
to read the specs of the CPU's listed?

So the 1st link only serves to demonstrate my initial point, you need to be
very bloody specific about which Xeon you refer to before claiming which CPU
is going to be spanking which Xeon.

Funny how you picked out the specs that show the slower xeon and pretend
that that one was the only one I showed stats for.

The one you're recommending as being faster also comes with a hefty price
tag.

  Dual-Core Intel Xeon 7140M processor
3.40GHz 16MB 800MHz $1,980.00

Something tells me if this guy is worried about cost he's not going to go
for the xeon that you are touting here unless it can do the work of 5 core 2
duo's, which I doubt.

The models I referenced are the more mainstream and comparably priced models
when compared to the core 2 duo cpus. Maybe I should have said "even the
fast ones *in the same* *price range* are only just matching the core 2
duo."

Anyway kind of a tossup really, but if he can get 10-15 core 2's instead
of 6 xeons I think I would go for the core 2's.

Sounds like you must have purchased some xeons a while back and are not
happy that someone might recommend something different?

There are several types, but even the fast ones are only just matching a
core 2 duo in performance.

I would go with the core 2 duo since you get more bang for your buck.

I think you need to specify which Xeon processor you are refering to,
since there are several types and not all of them will get spanked,
and in fact would probably do the spanking.

Actually yes thats a major branding issue that Intel has atm.
Both Woodcrest ( core2 tech ) and the old P4 crap come under
the same title I forgot that when I commented previously.

RE: [hlds_linux] Core 2 Duo vs Xeon

2006-11-14 Thread Lawrence Latif
Hi,

If you are talking about the new "Woodcrest" Xeons then it may well be worth
considering the added costs of administering the extra 10 Core 2 machines.

You mentioned that space is not an issue, but what about power? 15 Core 2
Duo machines will take more power than 3 dual xeon machines.

You should factor in other potential problems such as keep spares for 10-15
machines.

Of course if you use virtualization then the admin is less of an issue, but
hardware failure should still be considered.

would own the xeons without question.

Hello Martin,

try using HotSaNIC (hotsanic.sf.net). It will give you a much more detailed
anaylizing of your current system and what's happening. You should use at
least the modules traffic, system, part, diskio and netstat. I am sure the
most impact on your server will be hltstats and the mysql database, both are
bad performers.

Best regards

I have a HLDS CS1.6 server. It only runs apache2, mysql, hlstats and
cron.

Since mid of September I get a load spike every 90 minutes.
(See here: http://server.clanngc.de/rrdtool/players_flash-day.png)
No matter which kernel I run nor which plugins are enabled.

Also while playing on it, it sometimes gets stuck for a few ms and I
have much choke. Not much fun to play with.

I already lowered the ticrate, no change at al. Recompiled my kernel
with different preemption and HZ modes.

I can't find the cause for it! Top says nothing special while load
screws up. The kernel tasklist also isn't of much help.

Maybe it's because I recompiled all libs/programs with gcc v4.1.1 and

Re: [hlds_linux] Periodical laod spikes and very bad performance

2006-11-14 Thread Gary

Hopefully you're not using any of the "pingboost" commands.

Also; gcc4.1.1 can produce broken code, so be careful.

Hi there!

I have a HLDS CS1.6 server. It only runs apache2, mysql, hlstats and

Maybe top isn't the right tool to measure such load problems...

Maybe it's because I recompiled all libs/programs with gcc v4.1.1 and
now use libc v2.4?

Maybe it was a valve update?! I have no clue and run out of ideas!

Any hint could be of help!
