Wall clock jitter is the cause of your fps fluctuations..

Even though the kernel Hertz timer is set to 1000, we are locked to a
maximum of 333.

This wouldn't be to bad, except that it fluctuates massively, even when the
SRCDS processes on there are empty.

With Windows on a Dual Core Opteron, I can get SRCDS to pretty much sit on
256fps almost constantly for each SRCDS process even with people in it. If
this is the Linux SRCDS performance issue that many of you have been talking
about then yeah I have to agree, it does suck a lot!

Ahh, after looking back over the posts I now see that you had mentioned that
you are referring to HLDS where most of us are referring to SRCDS usage.

RE: [hlds_linux] Fluctuating Server FPS, but low CPU usage

2007-01-27 Thread Tristan Morris
Hi Whisper,

Is this specifically for HLDS or SRCDS or both?

I have noticed it too, but more for HLDS. On both custom kernel compiles of
2.6.19 and using 'decent' hardware.

It's quite strange. Albert may be able to answer this, how is the stats
value calculated? Between two fixed points in time? Dynamically
?

Cheers,

Tristan

I turned off my SUSE firewall and my server was UP and running on Steam
automatically. But then i turned my firewall back on and the server was
still online(i restarted the CS server in between tries) I done this a few
times and it seems to work now with the firewall on and no port
forwarded...
Weird Why is it doing this? Could this bring me any security issues?

Thanks!

Right, but X2s/P4s are just desktop CPUs, not meant for server usage.
Try a Xeon/Opteron for a server, you'll see the difference ;-)

My question is not about what ports to forward but why my server isnt
appearing on Steam.
I used to have a CS server before and everything was fine. I only had to
forward a port on my router at that time. (i think i was using FC) maybe i
had no firewall. :/

Does anyone know how i can forward ports on SUSE?
There is an option of Allowing Specific services to run like SSH and DHCP
but i cant see anywhere to input specific ports.

Thanks!

Old kernel's perform better with HLDS than new ones.

William Warren kirjoitti:

the reason is the kernel devs changed the hz from 1000 to 250.
Recompile your kernel with a higher hz. I would recommend using the

backported but still uses 1000 hz in the kernel..
Hi,

If you have X2 processors try the 2.6.16 kernel. I have about 70% of my
servers running with AMD X2 processors and 2.6.16 kernel. Kernel's above
2.6.16 don't perform so good, don't really know why... I have the same
settings, but the FPS is not even nearly as stable with example 2.6.19
compared to 2.6.16...

One possible reason would be the "Multi-core scheduler support" which is
added to the mainline kernel after 2.6.16 or 2.6.17. Try to disable that
feature in the "processors types and features" and test it. I would like
to know if that changed anything.

So, how can i kill a specific screen, and then restart the server?
I know, how to write a crontab script, just dont know, how to kill a
specific screen, via process pid, or name?

Thx

Re: [hlds_linux] Fluctuating Server FPS, but low CPU usage

2007-01-27 Thread Valtteri Kiviniemi

Big problems with 2.6.18. I noticed that servers running on it didn't
consume much CPU ('bout 2-3% for a 20 players source on dual xeon 2.8).
Changed to 2.6.19, everything now runs good.

What has changed in 2.6.19 compared to 2.6.18? Could you elaborate this
more?
