Re: [hlds_linux] FreeBSD FPS = HZ / 2
Nod, most professional teams would agree that very high FPS servers feel better. In the case of NFO and the other high-end GSPs, much of this may stem not from the peak FPS value but rather its stability, and its stability in turn stems from the fact that these servers are put on very low-load, highly tweaked machines and each generally gets its own CPU core. The higher FPS does theoretically help slightly as well, but not to a degree that many players would notice. The OP here is referring to the GoldSrc engine, which only supports up to 1000fps and scales its tickrate along with the FPS. From 500fps to 1000fps, that means up to a 1ms latency difference in-game. The jump from 100fps to 1000fps is actually quite noticable here, both in terms of scoreboard latency and in terms of how the game plays. The jump from 100fps to 1000fps+ is less noticable for Source-based games because the tickrate stays locked at a maximum of 100hz. The actual hardware and bandwidth costs are the reason for the price premium on the higher-end servers -- they are very expensive to run well. I'd agree that for most clients, and especially for public servers, something like a constant 250fps is more than sufficient. From Valve's choice of 30fps/tick for L4D, it seems that it is in favor of even lower rates. -John - Original Message - From: "Cc2iscooL" To: "Half-Life dedicated Linux server mailing list" Sent: Sunday, May 17, 2009 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [hlds_linux] FreeBSD FPS = HZ / 2 > But guize I need my 4000 FPS server from NuclearFallout at $5 a slot. > > On Sun, May 17, 2009 at 4:59 AM, AnAkIn . wrote: > >> sys_ticrate is max 1000. >> >> That won't answer your question, but 500 FPS is fine. Re: [hlds_linux] How best Panel (free) for hlds control?
A lot of work is being put into the actual web-application itself, but previous software by this particular development team has been very thoroughly documented with good support. We use their older software suite which was discontinued. ServerGears is looking brilliant and I have to say - I'm impressed with how smoothly it operates in terms of automation and the flexibility it offers. Ryan f0rkz wrote: > This looks great. [hlds_linux] Lag Spikes [Euro]
Hello, I think it was late last year we where seeing random spikes every few minutes, turned out it was VAC based. I'm currently seeing the same issue, on very low loaded servers, lag spikes every few minutes with no justification. I've been running all the network tools I'm aware of to try and diagnose this, however after speaking with a few providers on different networks they seem to be seeing similar issues. Anyone else in Europe seeing these spikes ? Re: [hlds_linux] FreeBSD FPS = HZ / 2
sys_ticrate is max 1000. That won't answer your question, but 500 FPS is fine. It's useless to have 1000 FPS. You just need it to never go below 100. 2009/5/17 lol37 > Hi all, > > I use FreeBSD 7.2 with kern.hz = 1000, with linux_base emulator and hlds > -pingboost 3 sys_ticrate 1 > But i got only 500~fps > I tryed kern.hz = 2000 but i have quite huge cpu consumption like 30% > Any suggestion ? > ___ > To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, > please visit: > http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux > ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
Re: [hlds_linux] FreeBSD FPS = HZ / 2
Well, you certainly get some CPU overhead emulating linux programs. What I would suggest, is using something like the latest version of ubuntu server. The built in kernel has a tickless environment.
