[hlds_linux] L4D and vm.swappiness values?

2009-10-25 Thread Logan Rogers-Follis
Has anyone ever messed around with tweaking the swappiness value for a
maximum performance on a Linux Left 4 Dead server? I'm running a CentOS
5.x server with 2 Xen guest domains for Left 4 Dead (and the 2nd for the
soon-to-be-released Left 4 Dead 2) and have been pondering on whether
tweaking the swappiness would give me any better performance. As is I
never use my swap except for some 32K that randomly shows up on my Cacti
graphing, but otherwise everything runs in memory.

I think you can use +## like this:
xxx.xxx.xxx.125+##
xxx.xxx.xxx.0+##

But I have not tried it myself.

[hlds_linux] Killing floor advertisement possibilities?

2009-10-25 Thread Saint K .
Hi,

Does anyone know what the advertisement possibilities are in KF? I host a
couple of servers but don't own the game myself, and I am new to the UT engine.

Is there something like a banner or motd or an advertisement system in it? Or
could you do anything with admin tools such as sourcemod?

[hlds_linux] net_maxfragments / A2S_RULES / etc

2009-10-25 Thread Kaspars
Hi,

I have faced a problem that I can't solve on my own therefore I hope
somebody could contribute to this thread with something useful. I have build
a software that does something very similar to HLSW. Recently I have
discovered that A2S_RULES does return truncated data from OB servers. I have
searched over the web and found out that I'm not the only one facing this
issue. The problem seems related to the net_maxfragments cvar, which is by
default 1260 bytes. Whenever a packet received from server is bigger than
1260 bytes, it *should* fragment and should be split into two or more
packets. However the header in the first packet is 0x which means
there is no more data and read() does not return anything anyway beyond 1260
bytes. I have tried to change the net_maxfragments to the minimal value
available (256), however the received data is 500 bytes and with the header
0x which is still not a split-packet. I checked the HLSW output to
compare with my results and it does truncate rules, too. I have checked
several servers and the results are the same for servers that have response
> 1260 bytes. There is seriously something wrong with the query protocol...
or I'm totally crazy.

Re: [hlds_linux] Fork with different IP addresses?

2009-10-25 Thread [??R] The-/
You have to have just the right set of ip's in order for this to work,
and you would do -ip xxx.xxx.xxx.1## or 2## and it would do 101(or 201)
to how ever many forks, if you try it with 17## like in your example it
does 1701...1702...etc, close but wont work, if valve could allow a
singular # operator it could work, or change the ## to not have a
leading 0. Either way I don't think IP forking is easily feasible
without a change in the srcds forking logic.

Re: [hlds_linux] Updating servers RANT

2009-10-25 Thread Joseph Laws
Whenever I've had issues with steam being slow it was DNS. I changed
the nameservers in my resolv.conf to something outside of the provider
or my own (typically, I'd use a Chicago pnap name server like
ns1.chg.pnap.net). That usually fixes the problem.
