If you connect without a lobby (i.e. through console) you can still turn on
cheats.

[hlds_linux] L4D2 Demo - console output 4gb seg fixup, process srcds_linux (pid 24262), cs:ip 73:00

2009-10-31 Thread Logan Rogers-Follis
Everyone,
I think I saw some posts about this, but at the time I just skimmed
past them as I hadn't seen this issue yet (rather I wasn't looking,
because I was busy making my new hlds run-level startup script).
Anyways the following is the issue I am seeing. Any advise? If it's
old news could some one just forward me the posts about it? (lost my
password for the mailing list archives (need to find that again)).

When I watch my Left 4 Dead 2 Demo server via "xm console domU" from my
dom0 I see the following output scroll on my screen:

4gb seg fixup, process srcds_linux (pid 24262), cs:ip 73:00e3f395

2009-10-31 Thread Shawn Zipay
I don't think he was "crying" about anything. However, the change to
sv_cheats was probably done to prevent clients from using the grenade
launcher and the various ammo types in the demo when they weren't
meant to be included in the demo. I doubt it's for any kind of cheat
protection when it was only done to listen servers.

Also, it's "more."

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D2 demo server spew in master console

2009-10-31 Thread gameadmin
To add to this, I see the unified spew in the master netcon, but I _DON'T_
see it coming from stdout on the server itself. This makes my logs rather
bare and empty and is, from my point of view, the exact opposite of what I
want. Note that I'm starting my servers with " >>
/var/log/games/somefile.log 2>&1" on the end of the startup line - I believe
if you leave them running in a screen they still output everything, but we
can't do that on our server for various reasons, one of which is we use
upstart (ubuntu service manager) to control our servers, and the other is we
already use screen for other things and it's easier to reconnect if you only
have one screen session per user ;)

I also still see what I'm typing (or at least I do when the unified spew
isn't whisking my letters off the screen faster than I can type) - but I use
netcat (nc) instead of telnet, which among other things lets you use ctrl-c
to exit, and lends itself well to automation (a 1-line script can connect to
all child servers and query the number of players in each)

While we're on the subject, I've noticed that if you DO redirect stdout from
a srcds server to a file as we do, it notices and has some kind of
fixed-size buffer that it fills before writing. That means that not only do
lines sometimes not show up straight away, but the chances are that at any
given moment the last line on the log is likely to be truncated. This does
not happen if, for instance, I pipe to another program - that program will
see output appear line by line. Any chance of the equivalent of grep's
--line-buffered option ? The options on buffering for srcds's own logging
system don't affect its stdout behaviour, and we can't use those logfiles
instead of redirecting stdout for the twin reasons of being unable to choose
their location and the file naming format being unsuitable for us.

Hi Adam,

Thanks a lot for the tips, it's working perfectly and fixed all my problems
:) Many many thanks :)

If anyone from multiplay reading the list, the
steam2.multiplay.co.ukcontent server is still not working on my side.

Cheers,

Marc.

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D2 demo server spew in master console

2009-10-31 Thread Chris Boot
Chris,

What I think would be handy is if it was off by default, but you could run a
command on the master netconsole to en/disable it that tools can use.

Also, when I run my dedicated servers (forked) I'm still getting the children
crashing a lot on startup but then settling down, and I also don't see my
commands echoed to the console. As in I can type 'broadcast foo bar' but that
never shows up, only its output. I have to type blind, which is rather
error-prone.

Cheers,
Chris

 Hello,

I now have players on my L4D2 forks, but I'm also getting the console
spew from all child processes in the master console. I don't think this
happened before the last update, and I'm pretty sure it has never
happened in L4D1. Is this a bug?

 Thanks,

Re: [hlds_linux] l4d2 demo sv_cheats

2009-10-31 Thread ics
If you have set up a dedicated server(s), the cheats work fine. I just
tried entering them on console and this is the result:

sv_cheats 1
L 10/31/2009 - 09:26:34: server_cvar: "sv_cheats" "1"
sv_cheats
"sv_cheats" = "1" ( def. "0" )
 notify replicated
 - Allow cheats on server

Maybe it's disabled for the client only and this is just a quickfix so
no one can ruin others games. Different for the game itself.
