Since L4D2 servers, correct me if I'm wrong, don't accept console input, 
so the method it uses to shut them down (sends 'quit' to their screen 
session) wont work properly.


You can get around this, however, using nemrun's -shutdownscript option. 
This lets you specify a script that will shut down your servers (instead 
of letting nemrun handle it), so you could write your own quick&dirty 
script to shut them down (such as using rcon) and then everything should 
work properly.


For instance, here's a really basic rcon implementation in python:
http://nemu.pointysoftware.net/cacti/scripts/rcon.py

So you could write a script like:

#!/bin/sh
python rcon.py server1.ip.here 27015 password_here quit
python rcon.py server2.ip.here 27015 password_here quit
python rcon.py server3.ip.here 27015 password_here quit
python rcon.py server4.ip.here 27015 password_here quit


And pass it to -shutdownscript with nemrun to handle killing your 
servers, in which case everything should work (but let me know if you 
run into issues/bugs)

dedicated Linux servers to get them to show in the list.

[hlds_linux] Mandatory TF2 Update Released

We've released a mandatory TF2 update.  The details are below.

Team Fortress 2
- Fixed a server crash caused by using the Half-Zatoichi to hit someone not 
holding a weapon.
- Fixed the Soldier/Demoman taunts not working correctly when the Half-Zatoichi 
is the active weapon.
- Fixed the Concheror animations not always playing correctly for players on 
the Blue team.
- Fixed a bug where players could switch weapons after deploying the 
Half-Zatoichi before they killed someone with it.
- Updated The Shogun Pack items to be tradeable.
- Crafting changes
  - All recipes are now known to all players.
  - Reduced the cost of most recipes.
  - Items previously crafted using recipes that will be reduced in this update 
have been upgraded to Vintage quality.

There is a synchronous call to Steam to locate the error reporting server.
The error reporting server went AWOL so the call to Steam got blocked. We

fact that there is any synchronous networking in srcds/steamclient. Fixing

-insecure because they use another anticheat tool and even they have same
lag spikes problem.

Do you have any more details in regards to the problem? I'm troubled by the
fact that there is any synchronous networking in srcds/steamclient. Fixing
some servers on your backend isn't going to magically remove any synchronous
waiting unless I am misunderstanding something.

I actually have the same issue, and I don't know why. I don't have any 
plugins at all, nor have I ever reported fake clients (in fact, I hate

server, by the way.

The only thing that I am doing that would differ me from someone else 
with a full vanilla install would be that I use nemrun, and I have for 
months without issues. I don't think Valve would delist due to a server 
updater program... it's not my fault their -autoupdate is broken. By any 
chance are you using it too?

It's really annoying. I hope I can get some insight on it. setmaster 
returns the same result as Jacob.

This should be reachable from your server, check any firewalls.

If you run some fake player plugins on your server, then your IP is banned, 
get a new one.

The message is not new, but since 2 days it appears very often.

Also there are lag spikes every 5-6 minutes (some for 1-2 seconds) and 
sometimes some servers simply freeze.


It seems that there's some synchronous communication between HLDS and 
Valve/Steam servers, probably related to account validation.

[hlds_linux] Server not showing on steam list

Server got reinstalled, didnt help
Server got new port, didnt help
 
All ports are open, here is what happens when it starts.

We having these lag / spikes since yesterday, I was in a gameserver during 
these lag and did a tracert on my laptop during the lag, it didnt show any 
problem on the server or the network betwen me and the server.

Every node responded as normal.

We also have munin with srcds-plugin monitoring all machines, traffic, 
srcds- cpu/fps/players/uptime and nothing is showing anything that might be 
wrong.

No eth errors or high traffic on the net.. or on the machine..

Please look into this Valve !

I've got also signals from other companies about this problem.

So it looks it is mainly valve problem with steam servers.

The message is not new, but since 2 days it appears very often.

 Also there are lag spikes every 5-6 minutes (some for 1-2 seconds) and 
sometimes some servers simply freeze.

 It seems that there's some synchronous communication between HLDS and 
Valve/Steam servers, probably related to account validation.

CentOS isn't too great for Gameserver hosting, or so I've found. I get
much better throughput with Gentoo in comparison. Debian was much
better then CentOS (There have been several notable performance
increases with the latest Kernels, including 2.6.38 which just came
out today). Realtime is retarded for GS hosting, especially when
you're going for throughput. SRCDS is a whore, Valve doesn't seem to
care at all which was made evident with the last wave of performance
hurting updates. Their testing field is 32 players on CS:S, I'm unsure
about other games.

We're running dual X5650s ( http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=47922
). Even this monster cannot handle 54 players that well.

Hi,

I'm also having similiar trouble with a 24 slot TF2 server on CentOS 5.5. 
There's random lag spikes occurring when the server is full. I've assigned 5 
cores to it with taskset and I'm running a realtime kernel to help give it 
priority but it's still lagging. Anything more I can do to try and get rig of 
the lag without a complete OS install??

Hi !

We did use CentOS for a very short time, it wasent the best(for us).
We now are using fedora core for one machine (4 cores running 2 TF2+ 1 
dods).

Another machine with almost same spec. running Debian (2 dods)
All is 32-slots minimum installs with custom kernels (no x-windows 
installed)

We are monitoring all servers with munin and can se every stat in graphs.

maybe you managed to get CentOS to run as it should, but we didnt.

if you having problems do install debian on a spare hd and try !
we are using kernels from here http://www.ulrich-block.de

Long version:
I recently changed OS from Windows 2008 64 bit to Centos 5.5 64 bit
because I needed iptables to filter all the incoming attacks so
popular in these days.
The hardware remained the same: Xeon w3520 (server version of i7 920),
12 GB RAM, 2x80 GB Intel x25-M SSD.
The problem I'm encountering is that when any 32 slots server gets
full, the server fps (measured from rcon stats and net_graph 4) drop
below acceptable levels. They may even reach 20-30 fps, and much less
when there are bots playing. This obviously affects the tickrate, and
players experience rubber banding and bad hit detection.
Both top and rcon stats say that the CPU usage never goes over 100% (1 
core).

On windows rcon stats reported up to 150%, and sysinternals process
explorer confirmed that the gameserver was using up to 19% of the
whole system (which means approximately 1.5 cores, since this box has
4+4 cores thanks to hyperthreading). On windows, fps were stable, and
only in a couple of maps the tickrate would drop below 66.
I've tried several kernels: the stock centos one
(2.6.18-194.32.1.el5), a couple provided by my host via netboot
(2.6.34-something, 2.6.34-something HZ1000) and now i'm using a
realtime kernel (2.6.33.7-rt29). Both 2.6.34 and the realtime kernel
were the best regarding to fps jitter, but they did't improve at all
the low fps when the server is full.
Playing with taskset to set the affinity of the process has no visible
effects, same thing with nice and chrt. Also tried disabling all
addons and using a 3 lines server.cfg (sv_log 0; hostname;
rcon_password) but still no effect worth mentioning.

I've come to the conclusion that srcds on linux can use at most one
core. I hope I'm wrong, since it would mean I'm stuck at running 32
slots servers at tickrate 33 despite having good hardware.
How you guys manage to run 32 slots srcds servers on linux?

I think so, yes. Only linux servers.

complaining a lot, then it's also affecting counter-strike 1.6

I dont see these issues on our tf2 server, but i do get multiple reports
that our l4d2 servers have lagspikes.

A few months ago there was a TF2 update that increased CPU usage
significantly.
The temporary workaround suggested by valve was to put -threads 3 in the
commandline. I can't remember if it was a problem specific to windows or
affected linux too, but from this we can say that -at least on windows-
srcds has some sort of multithread support.
And even in the (unlikely?) case that process explorer was wrong in
reporting the CPU usage.. at the end the tickrate was stable at 66, which is
the result I'm seeking to achieve on linux.

On windows it was working great and was definitely using more than one core.
Don't tell me I have to run 32 slots servers under wine :)

I guess that they are already looking into this issue, as this seems to have 
affected a lot of servers. This also happens in L4D/L4D2, also on their own 
official servers. 

My problem with Valve is just that they don't acknowledge this bug/error/issue. 
This has been going on for days now and it still doesn't seem that there has 
been any response from Valve.

As far as I know, srcds is always single-threaded.  L4D and L4D2 will use 
multiple CPUs if they are running multiple forks, but even in this 
configuration each individual fork will only use one CPU.

I have probelms too. I use linux (debian 6) and CSS on a own machine. All 
servers (6 gameservers) freeze for 1-10 seconds (with warning about "connection 
problems"), but the machine works fine. The problem begin at friday 10. march 
2011.

Confirm with me it is also so for 2 days, already have everything measured 
FPS drops no, routing problems can not MTR measurement is stable, the 
problems are with me at CSS and Dods.
