[hlds_linux] Multiple SRCDS Instances on Multicore servers?
A recent thread made me wonder if i'm running my servers the most efficient way. For the longest time I've been running multiple servers on a single box that has multiple cores. Each SRCDS instance would be assigned it's own core to prevent it from hopping between cores as I assumed they might overlap and max out that core. Plus I remember discussion of lag spikes occurring when it moves between cores. That being said, ICS in another thread said he's been running his servers not assigned to any specific cores. Here are my questions: -Those of you who run multiple SRCDS instances per server, do you assign them each to a core? -Do you renice any processes? -Do you change the realtime scheduling? ( http://wiki.fragaholics.de/index.php/EN:Linux_Optimization_Guide#Setting_your_servers_to_run_with_realtime_scheduling) -Any other process tweaks to give SRCDS more priority? I'm curious how everyone else is doing this to achieve maximum performance. Thanks. Re: [hlds_linux] Multiple SRCDS Instances on Multicore servers?
I do not think this is the best place to discuss about that as people in here tends to flame when you start talking about realtime(search for my email on this list where I was asking why when you run the gameserver as root it automatically promotes itself into the scheduler generally used by realtime processes) Personally I run the servers without binding them to specific coresand I'm running them on highly tuned 3.2kernels + RT patcheson specific intel cpu families(with hyper threading enabled) As for now we are not having people reporting lags. I'm running 3 x 24p servers inside a OpenVZ VPS which has 4 virtual cores and have not done any fiddling of the scheduling. Servers run perfectly fine with the defaults, constant sv_fps of 66.x all the time, even when all servers are full. Not sure what the underlying hardware is, /proc/cpuinfo reports: model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz On 3/11/2012 1:25 AM, Chris Oryschak wrote: A recent thread made me wonder if i'm running my servers the most efficient way. Re: [hlds_linux] Multiple SRCDS Instances on Multicore servers?
I run 2 TF2 servers, a CS:GO server, a Ricochet server, and a The Ship server on a VPS with 3 cores. I cannot say it's been 100% lagfree for all time forever, but I've never noticed sustained lag or fps drop on any one of my servers. I would say our worst is about every few days, the server will have a quarter second of snapback/rubberbanding. I've never bothered to try and lock servers down to just one core, and the only other tricks I have are declaring them as high priority when they launch. I think the CDR change was a bit earlier than the 2nd update. Re: [hlds_linux] Multiple SRCDS Instances on Multicore servers?
Chris Oryschak wrote: For the longest time I've been running multiple servers on a single box that has multiple cores. Each SRCDS instance would be assigned it's own core to prevent it from hopping between cores as I assumed they might overlap and max out that core. Plus I remember discussion of lag spikes occurring when it moves between cores. Unless you think you can outsmart the scheduler in your system, don't try; you probably won't make things better, and you will probably make things worse. My advice: don't use taskset to define cpu affinity for a process unless you have a good reason to do it and you know what you are doing. Setting process affinity to a core can have a positive impact in certain situations, but the OB/scrds engine is probably not one of them, unless cache misses are a big deal. Here are my questions: -Those of you who run multiple SRCDS instances per server, do you assign them each to a core? No, I don't. This isn't the kind of application which would benefit from that kind of thing. Also, in my particular case, doing this would almost certainly be detrimental to performance. -Do you renice any processes? Yes I do, and yes, lowering the nice/raising the prio has a measurable positive impact on performance as measured on client net_graphs and end-user perception (me). My advice: Definitely lower the nice on your srcds processes: renice -10 $GAMESERVPID -Do you change the realtime scheduling? Absolutely not. Realtime scheduling does not even make theoretical sense for this kind of application, especially not multiple realtime apps running on the same hardware. I'll just say it: anyone who thinks realtime is a good idea for game servers is an idiot. -- # Jesse Molina # Mail = je...@opendreams.net # Cell = 1-602-323-7608 ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: https://list.valvesoftware.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
