Yeah, I *HATE* when my servers get over-flown. They are right under
the approach path for Chicago's O'Hare airport and it prevents them
from staying updated all the time.

Just so you know, I've used -validate before and it removed some of my
configuration files. It's not required for the updated.
Related to the problem: try again in a few hours, perhaps the servers are
over flown

2013-10-10 Thread Jason
6 of my 7 servers updated fine tonightthere is one of them which keeps
getting the following error:

Error! App '232250' state is 0x626 after update job

I've updated for a while now with no issues, my update line is:

./steamcmd.sh +login anonymous +force_install_dir tf2 +app_update 232250
validate +quit

I've removed the validate and still get the error.not sure if there's
anything else I can try and this point.

Ubuntu 12.04 server -- plenty of drive space available

Thank you in advance.

2013-10-10 Thread Kyle Sanderson

If you can't build accurate cubemaps without significant effort, and the
Hammer editor display regressed to some strange black state. I'd hazard a
guess to say they're not well made, or they've put a significant amount of
extra time into finding hacks to glue it all back manually. Both are
likely, and completely possible. I know a few CS:S mappers have a VM that
hasn't been updated for this very reason.

I never said it wasn't possible to do it with the new tools that are full
of regressions. However, this is still the primary reason why I stopped
making my map at alpha3. Someone at Valve saved the world from an
abomination.

> Is this what you mean them being broken?
The buildcubemaps concmd hasn't functioned properly since Steam| shipped.
They're not included in the BSP, or they have the wrong name in the BSP. I
think someone attempted a fix early on as the bug changed (maybe I'm just
scrambled)? Cubemaps display fine in existing maps, which is probably why
no one at Valve cares. This is an end of product bug, not really a "oh hey
let's build our cube maps now!" kind of thing, which is probably why a lot
of people aren't running into it. There's still a significant chunk,
though.

Those who had the misfortune of updating now don't use a legitimate copy of
the game to map.
Kyle.

Re: [hlds_linux] Now that halloween is coming for TF2

2013-10-10 Thread ics
I've done 2 maps for TF2 and i can say Hammer works. It still does not
behave as smooth as it did before and is unstable for me, especially
when editing model properties or vertexing brushes or editing
displacements. And yes, i do start it from the games bin folder. I'm not
sure many people even know hammer should be started from there since a
lot of people complain about how laggy hammer is around forums and such.
They start it from old Source SDK which is broken badly.

I'm curious how cubemaps are broken? I seem to not see anymore
checkerboard along the maps and mat_specular seems to be 0 when i start
the game anyway. It used to be always 1. Is this what you mean them
being broken? No reflections on the maps that much anymore or what?

I've seen mappers posting new maps all the time since the Steam| update...
are you really saying they all pirated an older version of the game?

2013-10-10 Thread Kyle Sanderson
Not to be that guy, but the bug tracker is largely dead for already ported
games. Alfred seems to be the only one watching now. You still can't
publish a map since Steam| shipped. Cubemaps and parts of hammer are still
largely broken. Besides pirating an old version of the game, you're out of
luck for a once smooth(er) experience as a mapper.

Re: [hlds_linux] Now that halloween is coming for TF2

2013-10-10 Thread dan

On 10/10/2013 06:37, ics wrote:

What about the people that don't run Sourcemod?

You don't need sourcemod to mod a server

But, it's probably the easiest option if you want the feature and
sourcemod and the plugin exist.

So, the answer is, I suppose, they'd have to install it.

Do we really need a plugin for everything?

I doubt it. The TF2 pub community these days isn't really capable of killing
other players - at least not deliberately :)

If you get someone on your server that can play a bit you could always
ban them I suppose.

You won't be kept very busy doing that though.

Although it's fair to say they aren't really capable of (or interested
in) completing objectives

either. Maybe some shiny item will persuade them to fire roughly in the
right direction. They don't seem that interested in completing map
objectives any more.

I suppose the actual event itself may bring a few players out of the
woodwork, but
it'll be more difficult persuading the bunch of young children playing
spy and sniper that
make up a big %age of the player base these days that they should change
class to shoot

at the big monster.

A few years ago if they'd had 9 classes (which they do) and a
significant number
of the player base were playing just 2 of them, Valve would have written
a blog

about how they'd noticed this and how they went about solving the issue and
encouraging people to play the game yadda yadda yadda.

Now, they're don't seem interested in game development, they just add
community
created items and blather in the press about how more efficient the
community

are at creating items than they are. I shan't hold my breath waiting
for this community create a decent game though. There is reason to
rent an office and fill it with snacks and it's not for daft ideas
like "trading cards"

Who is going to give us something worth playing on steamos if
your latest ideas have been creating a crate and a key
and getting kids to gamble £2 to see what's inside it - amazing gameplay
there. Or, the best one yet, giving them a jpeg image of a game character
after 20 minutes of idling in a game and letting them sell it for 3p
steam wallet credit. This is what you need the hyper pan galactic "T" people
your handbook goes on about to come up with and implement?

In amongst drinking the kool aid and counting the money, they've
apparently forgotten that TF2 is supposed to be a game.

No doubt there's a plugin to help with this as well. Albeit it'll
probably hide the problem rather than tackling it.

This list isn't just for announcements. This is for server operators to
talk and exchance ideas. I thought this is also a great way to make a
request as a server operator since many people wished it last year and
year before that.

Killing people on the enemy team is almost the entire reason to play the

Even so, if during the Halloween event both sides can't work together,
