Failing to reply to a cvar query has absolutely nothing to do with failing
to validate authentication.

I thought this was caused by a SMAC plug in?
Seems to have cleared-up for me personally at the moment.  Just seems to
come in waves, and go away mysteriously - like MIB's after a UFO sighting.
