start and run fine. Been testing with a full load for the past 30

see if it stays up. If so, I'll slowly start adding bots every couple

Alfred, what is the priority on fixing the sv_downloadurl cvar so it

When can we expect more details on the ...

"Source Engine Updates

The old cvar sv_downloadurl does not work as I get

Ripped from Steam site ...

Half-Life 2 Pre-Loading Phase 4
September 27, 2004, 6:12 pm · valve
The fourth phase of the Half-Life 2 preload begins to Steam account
holders today.

This will allow users to download the majority of Counter-Strike:
Source in encrypted form. No purchase is required to pre-load
Half-Life 2, but is required to activate the game. The moment the game
is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased the game
via Steam will be ready to start playing.

I don't really trust your test results that much but HLDS does run great on
the kernel 2.2.x series.

What would be cool is if you could do some testing using the same
distribution running 2.4.x kernels compiled on different platforms with
different optimizations. Like i386 vs AMD Athlon-XP kernel. You could also
do different source tree's as well, besides the vanilla kernel.

Actually, maybe you can do this test for me. Pit the vanilla linux kernel
vs this patch set: http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/

Also, if you need help, I can write a script for you that will graph number
of players, network traffic, the current map, and the processes cpu
utilization. Then you can have visual results to compare. At some point
you should be able to deduce the best platform with the best kernel to run
hlds.

Anyway, I should be working on finishing up the HLBook beta 2 but I'd take a
break to pump that script out.

Also, I don't know if this is even legal or not but I've made a Linux distro
based on the Gentoo Live CD that boots directly into a perl based system
where you enter some settings and it spawns either a cstrike, dod, tfc, or
dmc server. It auto detects your LAN card. You supply the mod type, ip,
port and choose from one of the pre packaged config files to execute but the
config files can be edited as well. All the config files are copied into a
tmpfs and then sym linked into the mods directory so you can edit them. Its
basically for LAN parties and stuff. I don't know if I can distribute it
though with Valves stuff on there but it would be cool. Would anyone be
interested in something like this though?

I just banned a kid on our server for wall hacking ~7:15am Tuesday Sept 17,

he was using. Just thought you all might like to know.

A demo of him wall hacking can be found here:

Valve, I thought the latest VAC was supposed to stop wall hacks? Maybe you
can d/l the one this kid is talking about and test it?

Hey does anyone have a perl/python/c/bash/etc utility to parse all the cs
log files to show how many unique players have been on a server? I know most
of the stats programs have them but I don't need something that complicated
just parse the logs and tell me how many unique players within a time frame.

All great ideas but my original problem isn't solved by any of them :-( I
only have a concern with one directory on my webserver which contains
certain popular files which consume 99% of my bandwidth. I would like to
throttle just those files/directory. I already use iproute2 (MANGLE) for
directing certain traffic out of my multi-homed server. Thx for all the
ideas guys.

That would be the easiest way. But if you like to do it the admin way: " why
make things easy when you can make things hard" Then you can install a squid
proxy server that sits between the client and the webserver... Then with the
squid you can configure that all client can not us over a certian amout of
bandwidth, and you also do such advanced stuff like lower the bandwidth for
a specific user if he starts downloading a file that is over a certain
size...

I would like to know if anyone has created .cfg map files for the monster
metamod to be used in CS and where I could get them. TIA

That's a shame Jeffrey as I run a linux server in console (no x-windows)
mode. Downloading from FilePlanet is much like peeling your fingernails off
with a pair of pliers. Could I host this file for you on my box?
http://files.tribforceclan.net Does anyone else have an alternate url for
2.1 ?

Here's the web page...

The only download server is fileplanet.com (see the bottom of the web page).

[hlds_linux] ALU or FPU usage for HLDS_l ?

I'm interested in knowing which is used more when running hlds_l process
under linux? Is the ALU or FPU? Can Eric, Leon or someone from the
programming team comment on this? Is there a tool or set of tools that will
show me which one is being exercised most when running hlds_l? Does anyone
else *know* the answer to this question?

[hlds_linux] A problem with cs_hokkaido map under Linux AND a solution for those using Adminmod with reserved slots ...

Alright, I have a problem with cs_hokkaido killing my server under Linux.
The error is the same as I use to get with de_rock when they first released
the final version. They had to fix the map itself. Has anyone else seen this
problem with this map?

L 06/06/2002 - 15:38:13: FATAL ERROR (shutting down): Mod_LoadSpriteGroup:
interval<=0
FATAL ERROR (shutting down): Mod_LoadSpriteGroup: interval<=0

Secondly, I was looking for a quick fix to a problem most of us have with
respect to Adminmod and reserved slots. The problem being that typically ip
addyies listed in the ips.ini are dynamic and will change over time. I'm big
in low maintenance so I told my admins to subscribe to a service like
www.dyndns.org in which you run a client on your
box and you assign a hostname to your box. On the server side, I take their
hostnames and convert them into ips daily using this python script.

from socket import *
import string

f1 = open("hname.ini")
f2 = open("ips.ini", "w")
f1line = f1.readline()
while f1line:
hostname = string.strip(f1line)
ip = gethostbyname(hostname)
f2.write(ip + "\n")
f1line = f1.readline()
f1.close()
f2.close()

I list it here in case anyone else could find it useful.
