I saw that the today's Steam client update introduced the SILK audio codec

Is it possible to use this codec on game servers, or is it strictly for
Steam only?  Right now, I believe Orange Box servers default to the Speex
 codec.

My servers have the same problem. I tried added a bunch of master servers
using setmaster but that has no effect. I think the system is down at the
 moment.

 Hi VALVe,

We run a lot of public L4D2 servers. In return for this we'd really
appreciate our host banner to return on the scoreboard tab. It's the only
 decent advertisement way.

If the host banner does not return for whatever reason we'll have to go
back to spamming text based adverts every few minutes in the chat, prolly
not a situation you and I would like very much.

 Thanks for your time,

 Hey Guys,

I had a player who got offended for some unknown reason on our TF2 server
and decided to crash it a few times for revenge. I thought I would throw
his info out there in case anyone else wanted to ban him.

 Server logs

Right before the fourth entry which is what i am guessing would be another
 bad rcon, the server crashed.

Log entry from earlier in the day that matches the IP of the attacker.

Overall he was pretty sloppy about it.. but still managed to crash us
twice before we noticed. I have since enabled the rcon min and max
failures which I am hoping will deter this kind of attack in the future.

I don't think Valve sees any of these plugins and mods trivial enough to
give out the updates in advance or any information about them. Servers
run fine without them too. If you would be paying customer, things
 would be different.

Great, I did not think we would get that one so fast.

Anyway, is it OK to report a bug? Great. So, when the flag is capped
everyone with get critbuffed, including cloaked spies. This of course
is not the problem, the problem is that enemy players can see that
despite the cloak. I don't know if the same thing happens with
 disguises.

TF2 Server crashes with a segfault on my end, just after

Seems to be because of Metamod / Sourcemod because disabling those makes
the server work. Still, I wish those kind of changes in the server could
be tested against popular admin tools such as Metamod / Sourcemod next
time. Now I have to wait for an update for those two if I want my server

 Hi everyone,
I just found out one of my clients can change the slot count of his
server (CS 1.6), does anyone know how ou know how to stop him from
doing so ? Is there a common way of doing it and most important, is
 there a fix ?

I think he uses the server.cfg to send commands through to the server.

 Thanks all for your help

David: write this commands in console

shutdownserver
maxplayers 24
map de_dust2

2009/8/5 David Parker dpar...@utica.edu

I don't know why the autoupdate option would have anything to do with the
value of maxplayers. I'm pretty sure it's separate.

I tried reproducing this behavior on our server and I was not able to do
it. I have +maxplayers 24 in the startup command line. I added
maxplayers 16 to the server.cfg file and restarted the server, but it
still had 24 player slots. I tried exec server.cfg in the console but
maxplayers still remained 24. I even tried all of this again using
-maxplayers instead of +maxplayers in the startup options, but still
nothing. Any maxplayers value I put in the server.cfg file has no effect as
long as maxplayers is specified on the command line when the server is
started. My server also has the autoupdate option set.

What I *was* able to do was crank up the number of max visible players. I
set +maxplayers 16 on the startup line and put sv_maxvisibleplayers 24
in the server.cfg file. After the server started, both maxplayers and
status in the console say 16, but an A2S_INFO query says there are 24
player slots. Those extra 8 slots can't really be used, but they show up in
the query. Could this be what he is doing?

Thanks all for your suggestions, but when a customer restarts

this should be fixed in next update.

You can fake the latency on scoreboard but actual ping as shown it
net_grapg 3 for example, wont be affected. This wont get the player
around the ping kicker either as far as i know.

It's just a fake ping on the scoreboard. It's a bug.

Recently i saw a few players with a ping of 1 at their scoreboard. I
wondered where they come from and why they had a constant 1 ping. So i
checked their netsettings and found out that their cl_cmdrate was +XX .
The added a + infront of the value. I tried it on my own. And i also
got a ping of 1 at the scoreboard. The netgraph ping seams to be not
  affected by this.
Now the question: What das the + mean? is it just a fake
scoreboardping does it more, or is it maybe a indicator for a cheat of
  somekind?

As mentioned before, Valve uses a different system for the MOTD window.
While it's still built into Windows, it just basically takes a capture of

It has everything to do with it. Me as server admin notice issues with the
display of MOTD screens on our servers. Therefore this list is the
appropriate place to post such a question.

I have no client reason to request a browser engine switch. My question is
formulated from a server op's point of view, and not a client point of view
(and the forums are useless anyway if you want to discuss something without
getting spammed the fk out of your topic or a random moderator removing the

This will only serve to getting less attention from developers and

The problem is as following. Steam uses IE as engine to

As you know, IE is used less and less, and people now a
   days chose not
to install or update IE at all because their using an alternative

   the most used
browser).

Now to come to our problem, because we don't install or update IE

   caused by the
old IE engine (IE6). Widespread webmasters are fully dropping IE6
supports because their tired of having to implement

make it browser compatible.

Could steam please consider implementing or supporting

Not sure if you quite understand why so many are frustrated. Players
don't need to randomly get items they already have. It's becoming quite
a chore to constantly remove them from the backpack. I, myself, have
played for over 5 hours since release and have not seen 1 new unlock.
But, I have received plenty of other items. Sure, this method will be
great for all of the new players during this free TF2 Memorial weekend,
but I'll be one of the frustrated players that see free new players
getting the unlocks long before I get them.

Gratz on your Ambassador though. I'm sure that you'll enjoy having all

Not sure if you quite understand why so many are frustrated. Players
don't need to randomly get items they already have. It's becoming
 quite
a chore to constantly remove them from the backpack.

I'm sure that you'll enjoy having all
10 of them eventually. Too bad you can't duel wield anything.

Many are complaining about the new unlock system but I bet the

them have all been on achievement servers. Now they will just have to

back play the game and wait for the unlocks.

Can we expect the l4d DLC today, and if so when roughly? I understand
there might be delays etc, but is the *plan* for it to be out this
morning, afternoon or evening barring any issues?

 Zoid Kirsch wrote:
I'm a developer at Valve who is working on the Left 4 Dead Survival pack
update. We've made several changes to server operation that we'd like to
give our server operators a heads up on.

Since Left 4 Dead will now support three different game modes, we removed
the console variable director_no_human_zombies and added a new variable
called mp_gamemode which can be set to coop, versus and survival.
This variable is set by lobby reservation, so a normal server running in
lobby mode will require no changes by the server operator. If you are
running in LAN mode without lobbies, you will need to set mp_gamemode before
you load a map. For example, use mp_gamemode survival; map
l4d_sv_lighthouse to load the new Lighthouse map in Survival mode.

We have extended sv_gamestypes to also include survival. The default
value is now coop, versus, survival. This may cause issues for some servers
that have a lot of tags in addition to the defaults. We realize this is
problem and adjusted sv_showtags to show the truncated tags to help server
operators see if they have reached the 63 character limit.

The tags issue will be fixed in the forthcoming third party campaign
matchmaking update. We have extended the master servers so heartbeats will
be sent as two distinct packets, one containing the existing server
heartbeat, and another containing additional game data. This game data
will contain all the matchmaking server tags such as sv_gametypes, and the
list of third party campaign missions installed. This third party campaign
list will be used by people searching for servers with third party campaigns
installed. Server operators will install the VPK file of the campaign that
includes the maps (and associated models, etc) as well as a mission
description file that describes the campaign and its name used for
matchmaking. We hope that as various third party campaigns become popular,
more server operators will install them giving a larger base for players to
 find servers for those campaigns.

Re: [hlds_linux] WARNING regarding latest Unnanounced TF2 Update!

what you mean about broke them entirely, please more be more specify

2009/3/24 Jeff Sugar jeffsu...@gmail.com

So, those of us in #hlserveradmins updated our TF2 servers only to find it
broke them entirely! Hurray! I'm not sure exactly what was wrong, but
luckily I still had my old server.dll from another install of TF2 I hadn't
 updated yet.

I highly recommend you do not update your TF2 servers! If you did already,
you can get the old server.dll from my hosting here:
 http://dongues.net/dls/server.dll

I don't have the old server.so, so someone else will need to host that. I'm
sending it to Linux anyway to let people know about it, and so that someone
on that list can provide a server.so file for it.

 Back to tf2,
 -Atreus

This isn't true. I run all my Orangebox and Source servers, including TF2,
DODS and AOC, on an Athlon XP 1700+. They aren't 32 person, competition
grade servers, but they run very smoothly, with no serious latency issues,
other than the AOC server which has the same problems most AOC servers have.

And with this update, you will no longer need to run with -

Not only don't need to but shouldn't, running with -NoQueuedPacketThread
will cause perf problems. The only reason to ever run with it is if your
 server otherwise crashes.

A required update for Team Fortress 2 is coming. It will probably be
available in about 30 minutes. The specific include:

  - Players who are stunned by a Scout now take 50% less damage
  - Increased the minimum distance to stun a player with the Sandman
  - Fixed problem where clients were unable to join a team or maintain a
  connection to the server
  - Fixed Scout taunt kill achievement firing for people who didn't
  actually qualify
  - Fixed client crash in when creating muzzle flash effects
  - Fixed client crash when determining which disguise weapon to use for
  a spy
  - Fixed Natascha's chain not being drawn on the view model
  - Fixed stun code regression that resulted in a subtle reduction of
  Natascha's slowdown effect
  - Fixed rocket grenade jumps not propelling players as far as they're
  supposed to

And with this update, you will no longer need to run with -
  NoQueuedPacketThread.

A required update for Team Fortress 2 is now available. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive it. The specific changes include:

   Gameplay changes:
- Added a duck timer that prevents duck spamming while running around
   on-ground.
- In-air, players are only allowed to duck once before they touch
  ground
   again.
- Fixed several bounding box issues with jumping, falling, and rocket
   jump
air-walking. Bounding box should be much more accurate there now.
- Increased backstab check so that Spies can side-stab again.
- When disguising, Spies now always start showing the primary weapon
 in
their disguise, and can then switch it with the last-disguise key.

   TF2 Fixes:
- Fixed flamethrower loophole that resulted in the flame effect being
   stuck
on while the flamethrower wasn't really firing.
- Fixed exploit that allowed players to circumvent the force-fire
  timeout
   on the pipebomb launcher.
- Fixed a bug that caused Natasha's slow on hit effect to be inverted
   from
   75% to 25%.
- Restored sawmill_logs.mdl file, fixing some user maps that used it.
- Fixed some localization issues with Scout achievement strings.
- Removed the Final phrasing in the map loading screen.

   Engine fixes:
- Fixed a server crash on startup under Linux.
- Fixed a buffer overflow issue related to network string tables.
- Gamestats uploading is now done asynchronously. This fixes the
 client
   timeout issues on map changes.

   CP_Junction:
- Fixed an exploit where engineers could build a teleporter exit in
 an
   invalid area.
- Fixed a few bad overlay assignments and other minor issues.

Re: [hlds_linux] TF2 CPU Usage on Q9300

I have same situation (24 players CPU usage about 80-95% Xeon 2.5GHz (and

hlds.pl - polish hlds wiki ;)

2009/2/9 Adam James a...@pulsewidth.org.uk

 Hello,

I'm considering setting up a hlds_linux wiki to serve as a FAQ and
general information resource for the mailing list. There seems to be a
number of duplicate threads recently, and it would save a lot of time
and effort if people could just be pointed at a wiki entry.

I feel it would also be useful to write up some of the posts by Gary
Stanley and Nephyrin Zey, as they both contribute some insightful
comments which would otherwise be lost in the archives.

Any comments on this would be appreciated - if the response is
generally favourable and people are willing to contribute then I'll go
 ahead and set it up.

Re: [hlds_linux] Team Fortress 2 Update Available

./srcds_run: line 352: 19086 Segmentation fault $HL_CMD
...

2009/2/3 Jason Ruymen jas...@valvesoftware.com

A required update for Team Fortress 2 has been released. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the update. The specific changes include:

 New client features:
  - Added view model FOV slider to advanced multiplayer options.
  - Added a hide view model option to advanced multiplayer options.
  - Added custom crosshair support.
- Added crosshair image, scale, and color settings to the
 Options-Multiplayer settings tab.
- Moved HUD minimal mode Disable Spray options into the Advanced
 Multiplayer settings.
  - Added open_charinfo_direct command that opens the loadout directly to
 the class you're currently playing.
- Replaced the Open Loadout entry in the options-keys dialog with
this new command. Rebind / reset your config to defaults to use it.

 New server features:
  - Added tf_damage_disablespread convar to disable the 25% damage spread
 on all damage.
  - Added class limit support to tournament mode.
- Set the tf_tournament_classlimit_X convars to the max number of
 class X allowed.
  - Added tf_tournament_hide_domination_icons convar, that allows a
tournament mode server to force clients not to display domination icons over
 their nemeses.

 Gameplay changes:
  - Modified critical hit calculation. Overall, critical hit chance is now
 much more recent-performance based.
- Base chance is now 2% (was 5%).
- Bonus range based on damage done changed from 0%-15% to 0%-10%
- Damage range required for bonus changed from 0-1600 to 0-800.
  - Reduced random damage spread applied to all player damage from +-25% to
 +-10%.
  - Slight reduction (improvement) of the minigun's spread.
  - Increased flare direct hit damage from 20 to 30.
  - Rewrote Natascha's slowdown code to be more consistent.
  - Sniper rifle now supports Crit Boost state like all other weapons (i.e.
Kritzkrieg makes all shots critical hits).
  - Stealthed spies are no longer able to pickup the intelligence. They must
 uncloak first.
  - Increased soldier primary ammo count from 16 to 20.

 Bugfixes:
  - Added UTIL_IsCommandIssuedByServerAdmin() checks to several physics_
CON_COMMAND scripts to prevent clients issuing the commands.
  - Fixed bug in teleporter logic that allowed engineers to build
 teleporters with HUGE health values.
  - Fixed matching teleporter not getting a health buff when the pair is
upgraded (only the tele you were hitting got the health buff).
  - Fixed Medic ÜberCharge percentage in minimal-HUD mode.
  - Protected against an HLTV related server crash.

Note that we are still working on the client timeout and lag issues.

I know with today's hardware capturing the voice stream and encoding it

I don't think the problem is valve's binaries. There are too many
inconsistent problems. Have you tried verifying your files or
 disabling your addons?

What version of debian/kernel are you using?

You'll probably want to save the strace output to a file using the '-o'
option, since there will be a lot of it. Then just e-mail Chris the file.

 strace -o srcds_crash.out srcds_run ...
