We have released an update to the Half-Life 1: Engine. Run the
 hldsupdatetool to get this update.

The update is optional and fixes a name exploit that could cause a
 client crash.

[hlds_linux] rcon port being unbound in source

2004-12-18 Thread g-lists
Hi,
I have a weird problem on my source server where the rcon port is getting
unbound randomly. Everything else is fine though.

netstat shows only these ports active and associtated with srcds

udp18280 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27015 0.0.0.0:* 9515/srcds_i686
udp0 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27020 0.0.0.0:* 9515/srcds_i686
udp0 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27005 0.0.0.0:* 9515/srcds_i686

but when functioning normally we have this as expected:

tcp0 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27015 0.0.0.0:* 9588/srcds_i686
udp 3656 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27015 0.0.0.0:* 9588/srcds_i686
udp0 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27020 0.0.0.0:* 9588/srcds_i686
udp0 0 xx.xx.xx.xx:27005 0.0.0.0:* 9588/srcds_i686

This is on a Debian box running testing. I'm using IP aliasing so its a
different IP to that of the primary nic. Anyone seen this problem at all?
It is starting to get annoying now having to manually kill the process to
get rcon back!

Cheers,

john

How does steam select Content Servers?

Just a thought: figure out which content servers you DON'T want
to use and add them to your firewall IP block list, so that
Steam will be forced to talk to one of the ones near you. I
should check this out and see if it actually works...
Figuring out the address should be trivial, get a network
analyzer such as Ethereal and go wild.

I haven't tried it, but I'm not sure how well it will work. I've sniffed
the traffic thats flowing when updating steam before, and it seems to
contact a master (authentication?) server in the US which then says use
this content server. I'm not sure if the master server cares that you
can't contact the server. I would hope the client would go, can';t get to
that server, give me another.. but it's something worth playing with!

[hlds_linux] steam content servers

2004-04-29 Thread g-lists
Hi,
What defines what steam content server you connect to? As I understand it,
there are some geographically diverse servers, e.g. some in UK, Europe,
West Coast USA, East Coast USA, Australia, Asia, however I seem to
currently be connecting to steam9.steampowered.com to try and update my
servers, which is way out the sticks over in the USA somewhere, where as

Surely if I was to connect to the nearest server in Europe, I'd be able to
download the files faster, and hence be able to disconnect faster, and
therefore allow other people to connect and download. If the connection
was more reliable and you didnt get Send Failure, Connection Reset,
Failed to get valid content ticket, Ran out of content tickets all the
time, and stuff just trickled through it would be more efficient and would
mean we wouldnt have to keep hammering the servers for updates.

Is there going to be a concious effort to improve the steam distribution
system as so far there doesn't seem to have been any notable difference.
The end to end server-client connection seems unreliable at best. Seeing
as I can't resolve or contact any steampowered.com dns servers (at the
moment), I can't even get the patch from the website.

I'm in the UK, which has two content servers (altho one is filtered). This
is where Im connecting to..
