I've always used tar zxvf filename without an issue.

The MD5 sum should come in handy in this case... seemes like one block
of the tar got screwed, put a magnet near your tape? :>

Try downloading the file again, then untar... it may be corrupt, or partial.

I have run a HLDM and Ricochet Windows server for a few years
but am setting up a Linux server for development testing. I am using

tar zxvf hlds_l_3111_full.tar.gz

I got the following error:
