If you all would bother trimming your replies, you'd see that the
content of his posts are down at the bottom. The "Hi" is just a
greeting, likely inserted automatically.

2005-09-23 Thread Jason L. Schwab
Ok, I lied. I have updated my testing server, and it is showing:

version : 1.0.0.23/7 2505 secure

Which is a newer version, as the last update was 1.0.0.22

Awesome.

You could recode it to read commands from a file and execute them.

Is it possible to run a given shell-script/program from hlds/srcds when
an update is available?
Something like this line in server config:
update_notify_exec "/usr/bin/send_mail_to_admin.sh"

Would be nice, so a script can send a mail to the admin when a new
update is available or restart the server, send rcon messages to
current players... .

RE: [hlds_linux] RE: Mandatory Source engine update later today...

2005-09-23 Thread Jason L. Schwab

I have found a program that does just this, and its very useful, I use it a lot
for some of my web-based applications that control server stuff, when I don't
feel like opening steam, etc.

I don't remember where I found it, but you can find the C code on the URL
listed below, it compiles on both FreeBSD and any variant of Linux with just
started GCC installed (gcc -o srcds_rcon srcds_rcon.c) will work just fine.

I would assume with minor changes in the include calls, it should compile and
work just fine on windows machines as well.

This was actually written for srcds too, you don't need the sv_enableoldqueries
set 1 for this to work, like how you do with a lot of the other ones that are
out there.

This is the best one I've found.

http://www.computer-core.com/srcds_rcon_c.htm

It was originally found by me via some google search im sure, but I don't
remember exactly what I was looking for, or what site had this. Give it shot,
you can specify the password, ip and port in the source or you can just leave
it default and use the command line options, which is what I do.

Because of such security issues we strictly do not allow shell access.
As I said in the mail before: When Valve would restrict this to command line
its "ok".

And never ever feel secure. There are a lot of security holes in every
application remaining which were not found yet...

Erhm, why? The script gets started by the hlds server with the same
uid/gid. No one else could start it as a client.

Well, I hate that kind of method. The hlds server is the one that
already knows about an update in (I think) nearly realtime. So it would
cost extra processor cycles to check a HTML site every 5 minutes or so

what security problem. im think we all wont run it under root. also as long
it is a serverside var and cannot be changed via rcon there wont be a
problem. if valve wants they shall limit this setting to a command line
option.

> Instead another method to find out if an update is released

why simple if it works complicated... i still prefer the idea of havin an
option to allow executing a script when a new version arrives. for real
admins there should be no real security issue. (as long valve does not allow
rcon setting this var and enables locking this var (e.g. as sourcetv or
bots).

Hi,

Holy shit - that would be such a huge security problem! Please don't to
that!

Instead another method to find out if an update is released would be great -
something you can easily do with a shell script (like downloading a webpage
and "scan" for a message or sth.).

By the way, this release includes a number of very specific CPU and
memory footprint optimizations brought over from the Half-Life 2: XBOX
development code base. The release also includes all of the engine
groundwork to enable the Day of Defeat: Source launch that will happen
Monday, September 26 at 3:00 PDT.

More to come, soon

There will be an update for the Source engine in the next few hours to
help get ready for the Day of Defeat: Source release next Monday at
3:00pm PDT.

This server update will be mandatory for all Source game servers. You
must shutdown, update, and then restart your Source servers.
