I would go with ps

Re: [hlds_linux] Top or ps

2003-08-28 Thread Sascha Pietrowski / EDV Systemhaus Pietro
Hi,

top gives out the current cpu usage.

ps gives out the average cpu usage.

With 90% current cpu usage on a single cpu you should have
some lags in the game and a high ping. Because the cpu tasks are
stored in a queue and at 90% is this queue is too long - high ping
is the result.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / with kind regards

you could also use vmstat, which, as far as I've heard is more accurate than top.

ps. top seems to have some kind of problem when HZ is not 100.

RE: [hlds_linux] Top or ps

2003-08-26 Thread Scott Pettit
I would say top is more reliable because ps -aux tells me that my BF1942
server with 30 players on it is only using 13%. On a Celeron 2Ghz I find
that somewhat unbelieveable... Top tells me it's using 66% which seems a lot
more realistic because if I pile the box up with 64 players it lags to hell
and ps -aux still only says it's at about 40% cpu.

Go with top in my opinion.

Cheers,

Scott Pettit
