You completely missed what i was pointing out didnt you.. yep.. you did.
My remark was in relation to the claims of Slackware being as pure as linux

Probably becuse a whole bunch of us we have already done the I have
name here before, and the quickest way for you to get a lot of input
from a lot of people would be to find that phantom search button :)
But if you prefer here is mine
I use Gentoo, becuse when it comes to keeping your updated with the
latest software, no other dist makes it as simple (things like reinstall
for new version package conflicts are unheard off). Stil you almost
have the same controll over your syststem as if you would be doing a
LFS. And ease of use is on RH levels.

Well, I will w/o a doubt agree that gentoo has had its hiccups. hell, its a
brand spanking new distro. I would not put it on an uptime important server
yet that my job depended on. But I can see that happening in the future.
I do agree, that its hardware detection isn't perfect (yet) I've had acpi
scsi problems, ive had nic problems, and others all w/ different results
depending on which version of install iso I used. But its gotten a hell of
a lot better in a short period of time. Ive fixed all of them within a few
minutes to an hour. A quick search through their forums, or post to their
user email list has never failed me if I couldn't immediately fix it.

I love gentoo. Its intelligent, fast, lean, mean, and its potential is
through the roof.

They took all the best aspects of other Free software, and started from
scratch. And its still getting better. The latest 1.4 rc3 install cd is
really good. All they need, is a front end (option)that can script a lot
of the shit that can get tedious. Although I love that its so hands on,
allowing you to make a personal choice for every aspect.

just my 2 cents.

Sure you can go look at the archives and do some sorting. But it
takes a long time to find stuff sometimes if it was discussed a

You have been on this list long enough to see a thread like this
2 or 3 times? Run what your comfy with, use the 2.4.9 kernel,
and don't run it as root. Any flavor of Linux or *bsd with Linux

I use FreeBSD because it was what I chose at the time. And once

Testing. I've tested several of the 2.4.18x kernels, and performance was
abysmal in comparison. Never put down any numbers, but it was so evident
that I'd have to say at least a 30-40% change. The main gains showed, for
me at least, when running multiple servers per machine.
