Re: [hlds_linux] SV_DOWNLOAD_URL-Problem

2006-02-14 Thread Matthew Cheale

It won't be using IE as such, it'll be using mshtml.dll I imagine. IE is
basically a window into this and can set various settings that this dll will
utilise also. So even if you remove IE from your install, that dll will still
exist as it's a fundamental part of the OS and upsetting it's settings will
result in Steam web content failing.

And I have no problems downloading with sv_downloadurl .

I also know of someone else who stripped out IE on WIN2K pc and has no

But I do have in Program access and defaults setting for XP, Firefox as my

Maybe try downloading another browser and set it as the default. Worth a

No,

Even if you remove the browser (IE) in windows it will be able to use the
http-engine, since its built-in windows, with a couple of simple API
queries. And I understand why they did (do) this. Because its so simple.
You dont have to use your own XML-partser and so on.

As I understand it, Valve only hasn't made any plans to port Steam to
other operating systems apart from its home, Windows. This doesn't
strictly mean it will never run there... but I guess Valve won't port it
in its time of existence unless a licensor comes and pays billions of
dollars for such an à la carte wish.

Most unfortunate.

well maybe it is this way...

the game running under windows maybe uses your default http client to make
downloading simpler (firewalls etc) and there is probably not one firefox
user who has this problem (subliminal message included). also IE7 is beta
and, as someone pointed out there will probably be a security tweak to solve
it. (nevermind the more obvious one of not using any IE as your default

I use Firefox as my primary (default) browser and had been experimenting
with setting up a proxy filter using a linux box on my network to route
my kids browsers through. I was testing the proxy under IE as I didn't
want to interfere with my normal browsing. After testing, I turned the
proxy off and I noted the effect it had when I logged onto my CS server
and the motd did not load. Turn the proxy back on and it loaded fine.
This is when I started to notice the dependency.

I must disagree with this. I don't have windows IE even on this computer.
And I have no problems downloading with sv_downloadurl .

I also know of someone else who stripped out IE on WIN2K pc and has no
issues.

But I do have in Program access and defaults setting for XP, Firefox as my
default browser.

Maybe try downloading another browser and set it as the default. Worth a
try.

Really recommend running system restore on XP to wipe that beta.

That'd be it. I don't know about security - thinks its just beta that
doesn't work with steam. I had similar issues when running that beta
- recommend you uninstall. (Its a couple of months back, but seem to
remember I did a system restore to get back to normal...)

Great link Mike. And Luzi, I assume then you also tryed the verification
link that was on that thread? Checks your steam files for errors without
re-installing. I def bookmarked that one, you never know!

If no one else is having this problem with the same download server you are
using, try the following:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Cleanly_reinstalling_Steam

I had something similar this week where my CS client would connect to the
server fine if it had the local content, however any time it had to pull
down content, it crashed to the desktop. I thought it was our new
downloadserver, however I then noticed it extended to DoD when I played that
and it connect to a different download server. I forget what I was
searching for, however Google brought me to that page and it cured my
client-side issue.

Good luck,
Mike

Do U mean 'sv_downloadurl' ?

Ask all ur clients to delete to old files in order to re-download 'em (just
to see if the problems really occurs while DLding..)

Hi,

I have relocated my Server-Download-Content (sv_download_url) to a other
location.

After this, i can't connect to my servers

Everytime my client try to download a object (map, sound etc.) my client is
closing

I think it is a client-issue (because all other players can connect without
problem), but i'm not sure...

Suggestions ?

Regards LuZi :)
