delete your ClientRegistry.blob file and run steam again with
username/password

I had that problem too today, it means the steam update program you're
running is old.

If you're using ./steam -update

try moving the path to where the steam program is so it can update itself.

eg. /home/blah/hlds_l/steam
-update  /home/blah

should work, it worked for me...
