[Hornlist] Paxman Diploma model
Sorry for the cross-post, but there are so many wizards on both lists! I have recently acquired an interesting horn - a Paxman Diploma model. If everything I have been told is true, it was an early 50's copy of an Alexander 103, which were not available just after WW2. I don't have any way to compare an Alex 103 directly, but from photos it appears to be an exact copy. It is beautifully made, probably by Paxman the elder, and has a few nice patches. The bell throat is quite small (measured by how far in a mute goes). The Bb side is gorgeous - just the right amount of resistance to make the high end easy to deal with. The F side is a bit, well, blubbery, but I've been playing on a single Bb (1965 5-valve Paxman). Everything is well in tune with itself. I am playing only in a Woodwind Quintet at the moment, and it blends quite well. The valves, however, have very little compression. The end bearings and mechanical linkage are in great shape (no clicks), but the slides don't pop. I am considering a radical valve rebuild (the kind that involves plating, lapping, and about $1,000). Does anybody have any advice about the results I might expect? Like, a) that thing is a dog and will never be worth that, or b) ohmyhgod, you have a total treasure that should be insured and in your will? Or most likely something inbetween? He is not the only one who completed K371. Franz Bayer, the Mozart scholar, who completed the Requiem, has published his instrumentation by Kunzelmann Editions/ Switzerland, strongly following Mozart´s demands. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Im Auftrag von Joe DUKE Gesendet: Dienstag, 15. [Hornlist] RUSTED BEARINGS
Lucy: Off course, if you have a jacuzzi you can join your horn and play the theme to Captain Kidd while you fire slides from the stopped horn at the rubber duckies. Your aim will be much better if you turn off the jets, off course. A word of caution,- wait until all the ducks are defeated and you are out of the tub before you do the blow dryer thing. Alternatively, leave the horn in the drink and then throw in the dryer. Your Holton may never work right again, but when you sell it on eBay you can state with complete veracity that it was electrosonically degreased. AW: [Hornlist] re: need advice
WE did this to a colleague (professional), when he left the pit as he had a 20 min. break. So we mixed up all his six valve slides where possible. When he returned he did not give a look to the horn & just played. His fingerings were correct but the sound output was terrible. As is is a quite insecure player (from the player personality, while his attitudes are more like a champion), he did not find ount anything about why the notes were out of tune. Boy, had we (the second horn & myself) a hard time to keep off laughing while playing. But we did not help the fellow, but we changed back the slides during his next break absence from the pit. He smiled when he played the horn again, but still did not understand what had happen with his horn, the one way or the other. Dont try this "criminal" experiment with a "real horn expert". They get it within seconds & will blame you with their "alternate fingerings". -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Im Auftrag von Evan Hayes Gesendet: Dienstag, 15. Re: [Hornlist] Need advice
Two thoughts...check the port alignment on all the valves, check for a leak at the casing. One easy way to check it all over is to draw a bath, submerse the horn except the bell and mouthpipe. Stop the horn and blow. Everything will get wet but, it's not going to hurt the horn if you blow dry it after and put some oil on the springs and rods so they don't rust. [Hornlist] Bernard Heiden Sonata
Adrienne, I just finished playing the Heiden Sonata for my upper level during the spring at the university I attend. I LOVED it! I really didn't like it at first, but once I started to get the hang of it I feel in love with it. I still play at it when I practice. I hear ya' about the third movement. This past spring, there were three of us doing an upper level for that semester and all playing the Heiden. So, our professor had each one of us play one of the movements at our Horn Ensemble concert in the spring. I got to play the third movement and those 3/8 2/4 bars gave me some frustration. The best thing that helped me was to listen to a recording. If you can find one. It helped me to hear where those fit in with the piano accompaniment. Another big problem I had was in the first movement on the second page. The little occia (I think that's what it is called); ask you teacher about alternate fingerings or you can figure them out yourself. My professor told me those and they helped me with speed a lot. Many of the notes can be fingered the same way with the thumb and you just have to use the lips. Good Luck! And have fun! Re: [Hornlist] name that mello tune
Whoops forgot to send this to the rest of the Hornlist. The piece is by Yehuda Yannay. Its on the CD Hidden Melodies (info at http://www.cdemusic.org/store/cde_search.cfm?keywords=yyannaycds)"> http://www.cdemusic.org/store/cde_search.cfm?keywords=yyannaycds) Its from "The Hidden Melody". Greg Flint on Horn, Calin Lupanu on violin and viola (viola I believe on this piece). This ebay audio sample is definately a hoax. No doubt about it. I just hope some people don't fall for it.
