A lot depends on what size collets that you need the headstock to
take... {My two old Atlas lathes take 2 MT, and 3 MT, also 5C with a collet
chuck on the larger lathe. } If you are near Detroit I can lend you some
lathe time on mine, but if not, check the local papers. There are still a
lot of decent old Atlas lathes out there that people don't know what to do
with, that can be had for cheap. Also check used machinery, junk dealers,
and auctions as a lot of shops are closing due to the economy, at least
around here they are.

[Hornlist] Selmer, Courtois, Finke Brochures

2003-10-28 Thread Paul Mansur
I'm still cleaning house and downsizing. I found brochures from the
First Brass Congress, 1976, in Montreux, Switzerland. Being so close
to France, exhibitors included Selmer, Paris; and Courtois. I kept
brochures illustrating their piston valve ascending double horns that
were once so popular in France and Belgium. These are full color
prints, including the Selmer models in brass and silver. Both the
Selmer and Courtois horns were available in either ascending or
descending 3rd valve format.
I also have a small Finke flyer illustrating a few of their first
production model horns. The descant horn at that time had a rotary
change valve rather than the sliding valve now used. The double Bb
high F descant horn had a total of 6 rotary valves. Later models are
vastly improved.
Another interesting souvenir is a booklet by Claude Gordon entitled:
'How to practice to develop your high and low ranges.' Mr. Gordon
was/is (?) a trumpet player but his advice is probably good for other
brass instruments than trumpet and cornet. It was published by Benge
and distributed by King. The material is adapted from his Carl Fischer
books on Trumpet practice and routines.

Quite the opposite. The seller's description ends, "Sie
erwarten allerdings nicht ein hochwertiges Instrument wie
z.B. von 'Yamaha' oder ähnliches für diesen Preis. Aber
Bisherige Käufer, Musiker, sind sehr zufrieden damit." This
means, "Of course, you don't expect a high value instrument
such as, for example, 'Yamaha' or similar for this price.
But previous buyers, musicians, are very satisfied with it."

He does offer a 14-day trial period, after which he promises
to return the purchase price, less 30 Euros for cleaning, if
you are not satisfied.

In English or German: caveat emptor.

[Hornlist] regarding Beethoven Sonata

2003-10-28 Thread Hans Pizka
As described by others, you will find the file with the first print of
the Beethoven Sonata op.17 on my home page at

www.pizka.de/Beetho.doc

It will take a while to download it as it is a rather big file with 2,3
MB. As made with Adobe Acrobat, you probably cannot change the document.

If you are interested on more horn topics etc., visit

www.pizka.de/Sitemap.htm

and find topics of your interest.

May I point special to the WrHornPlay.htm pages (down at the bottom of
the Sitemap, with many pictures, audio & video samples of Viennese
players.

Also the special Siegfried pages with many samples (audio & video)

And the pages about horn making , the mouthpieces, horns, sheet music
for or with horn, teaching plans from Vienna, instructions for most
prominent horn pieces, biographies, historical articles, sociology, etc.

Ebay is an obvious first place to look, but shipping can ruin any good deal you find.
Check local listings and web sites for used equipment brokers. Sometimes you can get
a really good deal on something they haven't refurbished. They get a lot of their
stuff at auctions open to the public, if you can find them.

My lathe setup has evolved from the days I made pool cues. It is an inexpensive
import wood lathe from Harbor freight that I have refitted with a 4" 3-jaw chuck and a
cross slide. I rebuilt the lathe bed with 2"x4" steel. Where I got lucky is the
cross slide. It's a Hardinge compound cross slide that cost me $75 to get one of the
lead screws straightened. I can chuck bearing plates directly in the 3-jaw. I've
made a series of taper adaptors by by boring cylindrical bar stock, then slotting
front to back and back to front so it can close parallel in the 3-jaw chuck. I
recently put a carbide blade on my band saw, so cutting slots is simple. If you
haven't tried one of the new carbide blades,I recommend them highly. They were
developed to cut billet titanium.

As I said, my setup has evolved one cheap piece at a time to fit any job at hand. I
would love to find a good, cheap toolroom lathe myself.

My old horn teacher was Owen Jones who used to play 2nd horn in the

Philip Farkas. She gave lessons at the then, Queensland Music Conservatorium

[Hornlist] Re: Tips

2003-10-28 Thread James Potter
Hey Liz, as a person who has played all the Planets in all
parts, the best thing to do, and it's said too much is
practice. If you even want too, memorise the horn parts for
the Jupiter, and use them as a warm up. Or try the horn
parts for Gavrokna Fanfare. It has a wonderful horn rip,
and if you can have 8 horns playing that part perfect, it
blows away the audience. I also have gotten insites of
playing a pedal c, then go up half steps but keep going
back to that pedal c until you can do 2 octives. then start
on the next step up, and repeat. It really works the chops
and preps them to play a while. There is also a horn rip in
the piece called, "I AM." It was written for a person who
played a baritone sax player who died in a bus accident.
Any horn players who have played it know it is an awe
insipring piece. And the horn piece is easy to learn. Thats
all for me.

[Hornlist] Orchestral parts on CD-ROM

2003-10-28 Thread phirsch
I thought that the following announcement forwarded from another list might
be of interest to those looking to own a basic library of (Public Domain)
horn parts (plus a few less than standard items). I have not seen the
product itself and am not posting this as any sort of endorsement, just a
FYI. I can't tell if the horn CD contains a full set of parts or just Horn
I; my guess, from looking at the other listings is that all parts are
included, but maybe not. Some PDF samples are already available through the
site www.orchmusiclibrary.com but it doesn't seem like the one for horn is
functional yet. My guess is that, if you have no trouble dealing with
traditional Kalmus Edition parts, you would probably be comfortable with
the kind of sheet music you can print out from these discs.

The web site lists forthcoming volumes, including one titled "Debussy,
Mahler and more" that might contain some more difficult to obtain material.

If anyone has any firsthand knowledge of this product, please share it with
the list.

Regards,

Peter Hirsch

The only way I could find the Beethoven link was to click the Sitemap

find a Beethoven link just beneath all of his Family page names and a
reference to Authenticity.

However, although it may have once been a .pdf file, you will get a
warning that /Beetho.pdf can no longer be found on the server. Do not
despair. You can still download in .doc format. Unfortunately, the
.htm link doesn't work, either, only showing empty icons of what was

That's OK! It's nice to have such a treasure available. Having to
struggle, a bit, to find it, will just make it seem more valuable.

Hello Liz,

are you sure, you are asking about Beethoven Sonata op.17 ? There is no
chromatic scale as you described. And the highest note to play is the g2
(on top of the upper line of the staff - treble clef !).

Are you speaking "concert" or played on the horn or just notated
(written) ?

And, dear Liz, how come you will play first horn for Sorcerer & for the
Planets, if you have difficulties with a chromatic scale, which anyway
does not exist in this piece ?

If you describe a thing you are asking for help, you must describe it
exactly.

Ooops, yes, it is, as I assumed. You have difficulties ending the trill
together with the piano, right ? This is after the long chromatic run of
the piano from c in the left hand up to the trill, passing 6 groups of
1/16th sixtuplets.

Have a look in the piano score to find that the trill of the piano ends
with an "abschlag" ( two sixteenth or thirty seconds with the first note
just one step below the main trill note & the second little note the
same as the main trill note : sample: trill a - bnat. ending with g - a
Before entering in the down beat g, perhaps. These "abschlag" notes are
usually written like grace notes but with out the strike-through.

How to meet there ? Well, the piano needs a bit more time for this very
rapid chromatic scale. So leave some more time for the pianist by
stretching the measure (it is at the end of the last movement), then
trill the next full measure, listening to the pianist very carefully &
exchanging a look each other to place the "abschlag notes" the same time
together, perhaps by attacking them separately.

Moral for you: if you ask somebody for help (and it is more pleasure to
offer help than to receive help), think twice before asking. Perhaps,
note down things before typing it in the mail. Ask exactly by pointing
to exact piece names, mouvements, measures. Express your question
clearly using our horn wise notation.

This will result in easier & faster response to your questions.

Good luck !

PS: You can find the first print of that Sonata on my Web Site - full
text. It is a PDF file of 2,3 MB, so it might take a while until you
will see the pictures.

[Hornlist] Female Horn Players In Australia

2003-10-28 Thread Kris Gaz
(3rd times a charm... I hope...)

Although I am still in the midst of completing my B.Music/B.Teaching degree
I have just started researching what I hope will become the focus for my
masters of music (musicology) thesis.

The area that I am exploring is that of Female Horn Players in Australia,
focussing on those who have played in the major professional orchestras,
from the first to hold a seat in a major orchestra to the present.

Ideally I hope to do this primarily as a historical view – for instance,
looking at what it was like for female players back in the beginning as
compaired to now. Before there was blind auditioning were female players
disadvantaged? Who was the first female hornist to hold a chair in each of
the major orchestras – when was this etc. However I desire to also include
shortish biographies on all these hornists.

I should point out that I am not purely interested in those players that
hold permanent positions in orchestras, I am also interested in professional
freelance hornists too.

While thanks to the some what brilliance of the internet I have what I
believe to be a rather recent list of all female hornists currently playing
in the major professional orchestras in Australia (both symphony and
ballet/opera). However I am finding it nearly impossible to come across any
information for past players in these orchestras. While I am aware that
this will involve hunting through the archives of each orchestra I was
hoping that the hornlist might be able to help kickstart my quest.

So these few questions I put forth to all of you

1.	Are there any websites/books/theses out there that focus on either female
horn players in Australia, or female hornists in general (as info on
Australian players might be contained therein).
2.	Does anyone have any info on any female hornists past and/or present –
even if it is simply her name and the orchestra, it would cut down my time
rummaging around in the archives quite considerably.
3.	And finally if by any chance you are a female hornist who has either
previously played in or currently playing in any of the professional
orchestras in Australia would it be possible to get in contact with you
directly.

Must go and hassle my horn teacher to see if she has any information on
other players. I shall leave grilling her on her professional playing
history for another day.

Re: [Hornlist] tips

2003-10-28 Thread Walter Lewis
Hi Liz,

The best tip I can offer concerning Beethoven's Sonata... If you don't have
one, seek out a reputable horn teacher for private lessons. I know that
that does not probably help you in the short term with the Beethoven for
your audition, but for the future...

Sounds as if you have some talent towards the horn, but as most of us on
this list when we were high school freshmen, need a good teacher. A good
teacher using good etude methods such as Kopprasch (just ask Prof. I. M.
Gestopftmitscheist about how great Kopprasch is! He sure will let you know
his valued opinion!) will help you improve technical skills. Kopprasch is
just one example of etude methods that will help you improve your playing
skills greatly. A good teacher will be able to analyze your playing and
work with you from that point.

Since you posted that you live in MA, maybe some of our other colleagues on
this forum from the Northeast can offer opinions as to where and or to whom
to seek out for private instruction.

Good luck with your audition.
