Re: [Hornlist] Mouthpiece specialist

Playing a brass instrument - depending on the standard of playing

made-to-measure suit. Playing the horn is not a "buy & run" affair.
If one doesn´t make his daily home work for many years, horn, teeth,
mouth piece, altered lips - all will not produce a reasonable player.
There is more to do. Listen & practise. And this remains a life long
"affair", as long as you play the horn.
This is true! You really must work at learning to play what you have.
 There are no magic fixes.

[Hornlist] how much is too much (dents)

2004-05-02 Thread J. Kosta
I recall reading an article saying that dents that reduce the cross-section
area of a tube by less than 33%, usually do not cause problems.

With one of my horns, reducing a smallish leadpipe depression seemed to
make a noticeable improvement. On another horn, fixing a similar leadpipe
depression did not seem to make any difference.

If your horn has consistent 'bad notes' (with for example intonation or
sound quality), then perhaps fixing dents might help.

[Hornlist] how much is too much (dents)

2004-05-02 Thread Leonard & Peggy Brown
>>My horn is in need of some sodering and dent removal. I'm wondering
how far I should take this. I don't want to ruin the sound of my
instrument (obviously). There are several large dents (present when I
purchased the horn, not from me) that need to be removed, and some
tubes (by the mouthpiece and slides) have recently come loose and need
to be resodered on. I'm wondering how far I should take the dent
removal etc when I send it in? The big dents have to go, but should I
ignore the little ones, or should I get those removed too? Anybody
know how much this usually costs?

Thanks
Shannon<<<

Shannon,
If you don't want to ruin the sound of your horn, I am guessing you are
happy with the way it plays. Why remove the dents at all then? Yes, the
loose joints MUST be fixed because they will get worse and pipes will start
bending.

RE: [Hornlist] Beethoven Quintet for 3 horns, oboe and bassoon

2004-05-02 Thread Hans Pizka
Hello Bob, I published this piece with an additional double bass. But it
can be left off. The other parts are like the original. Will send it to
you (please send me your postal address off list) plus the promised CD
(no charge for the CD).
