[Hornlist] Larsson Concertino

2004-05-22 Thread Don & Judy Birchett
Eric,

The first thing I would do (did) was to do a google search on Eric Larsson Horn
Concertino.

If you have not done so, I would suggest that you do the same. This was an interesting
highlight I found.

RE: [Hornlist] Pizka Classic Double Horn

2004-05-22 Thread Hurricane Chinooks
Paul,

Thanks for your review. I, too, am a Pizka fan, based on my use of his
mouthpiece. Although I won't have the money available for some time, the
Pizka Classic is on my want list. Until then, I'll just have to be happy
with my 50 y.o. Alex 205.

[Hornlist] IHS Advisory Council

2004-05-22 Thread Phil Hooks
I just received the latest issue of the Horn Call, which includes the ballot to elect
members of the IHS Advisory Council. Tim Allport and I nominated Michelle Stebleton to
serve on the council. We believe that Michelle will be an energetic and forward
thinking member of the council. I met Michelle when she attended her first IHS
workshop as a young teen-ager. She has been an enthusiastic
participant/performer/exhibitor ever since. She frequently leads warm-up sessions at
workshops, at 8:00am! Most recently, she hosted the Southeast Horn Workshop at Florida
State University. To give you an idea of her dedication to young people, she scheduled
several sessions geared to middle and high school students.

Michelle's professional qualifications are well documented in the Horn Call.

[Hornlist] Yamaha 668N

2004-05-22 Thread MichaelK216897
   Hey guys,
Are you talking about the normal Yamaha 668 or 668Ns, or the newer
668NII? I own one of the newer 668NDII's and am VERY pleased with the playing
qualities. It was awkward to play at first because I was playing on a school
Holton H180, and the valves on the Yamaha were LIGHTNING fast compared to the
Holton valves I grew accustomed to (slow, like in mud). It has an ease of playing
and even through the range. A horn normally doesn't have s set tone, but the
horn can affect the tone somewhat.I think it's more mental approach and
equipment affects it somewhat but mostly mental. My teacher plays some Geyer wrap
Hoyer, and when she would demonstrate on my school owned holton H179 or H177,
she stilled sounded like herself (nice beautiful tone). I
I don't know about everyone else, but Im happy with the
668NDII.it's so hard not to get scratches on it, I don't know if they have a
thinner
lacquer or something than holton does, because I don't recall putting scratches
in the holtons i hadI treat the Yamaha as if it were more fragile than an
egg, and scratches are getting everywhere, and the first ones were from the
repair shop (I tried to have the "factory dust" cleaned out)!

   Best,
   Mike

Hi Joe,

www.pizka.de

Take the tour. You can spend hours at his site.
There is an amazing amount of information at
Han's site and you will see/hear things that are
not available anywhere else.

Enjoy!Jerry in Kansas City

Congratulations on your new horn, Paul. I would like a Pizka horn for myself
one day, especially for small ensemble playing. I love the sound of these
horns. In the meantime, I'm really enjoying my Merker Millennium.

If I may ask, are you pursuing a solo career, or are you going to be playing
in a large ensemble? Please let us know how the Pizka blends in with other
horns.

[Hornlist] Pizka Classic Double Horn

2004-05-22 Thread Paul Rincon
Hello fellow Horners!

My name is Paul Rincon, I am a soon to be Senior at Lake Brantley High school. I've
been studying horn with my teacher Mr. William C. Robinson for about 5 1/2 years now
(some of you on the list might know/studied with him). Anyways!
As an early graduation Present, my parents decided to buy me a new french horn, as my
old one (a 22 year old yamaha with a Lawson leadpipe) was in a not very good
condition, and it was certainly not my style of horn.
So of course, I began to look at all of the usual suspects, Elkhart Conn's, The new
Yamahas, Alex, Schmid, Paxman, Finke, etcetera. However, one caught my eye, it was the
Pizka Classic double horn ( http://pizka.de/PizClasHr.htm ) I then proceeded to
contact professor Pizka himself, and over a period of 3-4 weeks and bouncing emails
back and forth, It was decided that I would receive a Pizka Classic double with the
Gold brass leadpipe.

I received it 4 days ago...let me just say; that it is the most incredible instrument
I have ever played (Including my teacher's 1942 Geyer) The response is extremely fast,
the tone shiny, and the most beautiful decorations I have ever seen on an instrument.
It is truly a work of art, impossible to overblow (due to the Kranz) and has a very
carrying Pianissimo. In few words, I love it.

I encourage you to keep his horns in mind if you are of the sort who likes the
"Viennese" sound, the smaller instruments, but the finesse and agility of one. I have
found Prof. Pizka a pleasure to deal with, and he has answered all of my questions and
concerns promptly.

I highly recommend the Pizka Classic.

Paul R.
