I said "as I recall" and sure enough, this old brain forgot and got it
wrong; it was really "Full Moon and Empty Arms."

I thought "Tonight We Love" was from Tchaikovsky Piano concerto No.1. Does
anyone else here remember an obscure little Hebrew kids show called "The
Magic Door"? It aired in the Chicago area in the 70's and had this lovely
melody for a theme song. I later learned that it was the Shepherd's Song
from Beethoven's 6th Symphony.

Is that you, Hans, or has someone now 'pinched' your pass-word for the horn list??

If they did that, then, you will need to get a new one from Cabbage HQ, and that is,
sadly, to be done only between 1:00 AM and 1:03 AM, on Sundays.Otherwise, Cabbage
HQ is not available for ordinary business activities -- yours may not be ordinary,
however!!

Have a good visit with your own bed!!

[Hornlist] Re: Horn Digest, Vol 21, Issue 17

2004-09-14 Thread Sean R. Kirkpatrick
Glenn Miller made the Hit Parade in the early 1940s performing "Moon Love" - a swing version of the Tchik 5 II melody.

Sometime in the late 60's/early 70's, the Philadelphia Brass Quintet
playing under the name "The Torchy Jones Brass Quintet", recorded an LP,
"Catch the Brass Ring". On it, three classical melodies are played in
jazz arrangement by Frank Howard: Tchaik 5 (recorded as Jonesy Swings)
where Mason Jones takes a turn on the rope, Dvorak's 5th entitled
"Riding Home" which leaves you thinking of Hoss and Little Joe, and
"Spring Love" from the Grieg Piano Concerto (again featuring Mason
Jones.) There are 8 or 9 other jazz arrangements, including That Old
Black Magic, Love is Just Around the Cornet, Don't Get Around Much
Anymore, and others.

There are, of course, no lyrics, but the playing on this obscure
recording is superb. The group, comprised of Mason Jones, Gil Johnson
and Si Rosenfeld (trumpets), Hank Smith (tbn) and Abe Torchinsky (tba)
was augmented with a rhythm section of Art Ryerson (guitar), Bill Lee
(bass), and Oliver Jackson Jr. (drums). It was released as a Demo LP,
and there aren't too very many copies of it extant as far as I can tell.
I managed to snag one on ebay 6 months ago or so.

Certainly recorded by Miller. Had just about the most

Dear Sir:
A representative from our company recently heard your performance with the NJ
Turnpike Authority Drum and Bugle Corps, "The Phantom Lane Changers"
What a shame that an artist of your stature has to purchase his own
instruments.
Our company would like to offer you an Artist Clinician position and (of
course) a free horn
if you would consider performing on and sponsoring our newly designed
"TONE FREE MODEL" quadruple horn.
It is superbly made by well trained craftsman from Manchu Pichu who have been
constructing horns
for over five centuries and who guarantee it for the life of your career.
A recent review of the horn appeared in the Amazonian Horn Club's latest
digest.
The reviewer found the horn to be" unbelievable in all respects"
adding, "if I had such a horn, I would never have another worry about the
direction of my career"
Hoping you will accept our offer, all we require is a money order to secure
your flight to Manchu Pichu for presentation of the horn and pictures for our
brochure (approx. $4000 US).
Hoping for your fast and enthusiastic response,
we remain sincerely in awe of your qualifications,
the guys from M. P.
