A comparison:

Saxo-phon - saxo-phob - saxo-phil (pronounced as sexo-phil)

Saxo could also be understood as in connection with the saxo-nians, a
tribe located in east germany bordering to the Czech Republic.

[Hornlist] Re: Solo Website

2004-09-22 Thread Anna Henry
If you have ever come across the website www.mutopia.com, you will find many public
domain works online. The horn part from Mozart's 3rd Concerto is on there, as well as
Saint-Saens Morceau de Concert. I would assume that if someone made a website,
anything that is public domain could be used without permission, as long as it was an
urtext edition.

As far as horn literature goes, most of what we're looking for was published too
recently to be public domain . . . thus the high prices for anything modern!

[Hornlist] Willson - or maybe Winston instruments?

2004-09-22 Thread J. Kosta
Paul Mansur's comment about use of Willson (top level Swiss) brass
instruments in a school setting made me think that maybe Dave Singletary's
request was for info about E.M. Winston instruments -

see web page: http://www.emwinston.com/

I do not have any experience with either Winston or Willson instruments.

Re: [Hornlist] Willson Horns

2004-09-22 Thread Billbamberg
I believe Wilson is being carried at Woodwind/Brasswind at a reduced price. I'd like
to try one to see if the patent valves make much difference. I remember the startling
results when Osmun manually enlarged the ports on my son's '69 Reynolds bass trombone.
It took away the stuffy feel completely, but left enough resistance that he can play
it with a shallow Eb tuba mouthpiece with complete control.

I guess I just ran through a few topics other than Wilson, but resistance is a subject
that I'd like to understand better. The last few NAMM shows, the push has been
towards free blowing. This last show I tried some high level low brass that was so
free blowing I had real trouble playing soft. The experience with the bass trombone
demonstrated to me that there are many sources of resistance. When the obstruction
resistance was removed by opening the valve ports, the resistance that was left was
just about right to allow good control of a larger air source.

I think I'm finding that 'free blowing' is a characteristic that could easily impress
me in the music store when I'm comparing brands, but may not represent the true
musical capabilities of the instrument. I reserve judgment of instruments I'm
auditioning until I've played them in a well tuned, high level group. What, exactly,
makes some horns stuffy and some horns 'free blowing'. What are the pros and cons of
playing a big horn (8D) with a normal mouthpiece compared to, what I remember as
standard in Boston, of playing a normal (medium) horn with a big mouthpiece?
