Re: [Hornlist] helikon
From: Anna Katharina Schumann [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am looking for a helikon, rather used and not too expensive but still in conditions to play on. Does anyone know anything, is there any forum where instruments were sold? I would be glad for information, I assume from web.de, that you are German, even if there never were German Vikings. German eBay frequently presents helicons for sale, even if they quite often are wrapped like the instrument, which was patented in tsarist Russia as the Herculesophone or something like that. The difference is most notable in the BBb contrabass version, where the US helicons, like sousaphones, have 270° of the outer perimeter covered by two layers of tubing. The Herculesophone types always have all tubing, but for the bell, in front of the player, and they always have rotary valves. Whereas the US, Belgian, and French helicons (almost) exclusively are pitched in Eb or BBb, then the Czech and German helicons most often are in F or BBb with a few samples in Eb surfacing from time to time. The Czech and German helicons very often have 4 rotors, whereas the US, Belgian, and French helicons most often have 3 pistons with a few samples with 4 pistons. All circular basses are heavy compared with horns. The weight ratio rarely goes below 4:1. In general the Czech and German helicons are made out of thinner brass sheets than the older US helicons, which were massively built like the old sousaphones. And just about all US made helicons are old, as the helicon lost the battle with the sousaphone. That may have been a matter of being able to march in closer ranks. Swaying a helicon may decapitate the player to the left. A certain style of helicons used to come up on German eBay in recent years: Russian made BBb's with just 3 rotors and huge bells almost without a flare like the original Cerveny Kaiser tubas. I would have liked to own one of these just for the bell, but I already have 3 sousaphones and 2 tubas, so space matters. And that touches a really sore spot of the helicons: unlike with sousaphones the bell rarely can be taken off. So helicons are pure hell to transport! That was due largely to the development of the sousaphone by C.G.Conn, LTD, in association with JP Sousa. Sousa's influence and the buying power of the US government held sway over the market. Originally, the sousaphone had a bell that flared straight up, giving it the endearing nickname, raincatcher, and making it look a bit more like its predecessor. Sousa preferred the bell up sound, Conn preferred the bell forward marketability. One can actually still buy a sousaphone with a raincatcher bell from King, now merged with the Conn name, among others. And now, let's all play Trivial Pursuit, the Brass Players' Edition. Dave Weiner Brass Arts Unlimited Of course Dave is right about the NHR aspects. However I didn't initiate this thread, whereas I attempted to give a fairly thorough reply, as my level of knowledge on this topic very likely is above average in horn contexts. The statement of the current availability of raincatcher sousas exceeds my level of being informed. Please give me some hard proof! As a very tolerant person I will accept it in a software format. RE: [Hornlist] Austrian Company Unveils New Horn!!!
Dear Prof. I did not know that Schoenbach in Bohemia belongs to Austria, nor would Osmanek be a typical Austrian name. No joke now: these kind of horns were mass produced in Schoenbach near Graslitz/Graslice got the nickel silver name plate of the dealers. They were band horns or for the military. Graslitz Schoenbach are just accross the border from Markneukirchen Klingenthal in Germany, with their famous Knopf Hoyer brand. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 4:40 PM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Subject: [Hornlist] Austrian Company Unveils New Horn!!! Has anyone heard anything about the Midwest Horn Workshop? I went last year (at Butler University), but I have heard nothing about a conference this year. Does anyone know if there will be one, when, where . . . those kind of things? Thank you! Anna Henry Hi Anna, There isn't going to be one this year because nobody wanted to host it. I've been trying to convince some of my teacher friends to host it next year, but so far, no luck. If anyone knows a Midwestern Horn professor well enough to just call and make demands, I highly suggest you try as well. Statistically speaking, one of us is bound to succeed.
