Or, if you want to do it on the cheap, go to Staples and spend about a buck
on multi-colored foam pencil grips. They fit nicely over the spatulas and
you'll even have one left over to use as a spare.

Re: [Hornlist] Horn and Trumpet - if you put away one...

2005-09-12 Thread LimeTree
This is from my own experience, but when I started playing trumpet in high
school marching band, I still played french horn, but not as much as I
should have. I lost A LOT of my low range and struggled for quite some time
to get it back. So I think putting the horn down for a long time would be a
mistake. However, I do not know what putting the trumpet down would do for
the trumpet chops... maybe he would improve more quickly if he concentrates
on one embouchure vs. two, though? Which one does your son like better? If
he enjoys them both, maybe the best option is to give up something else
besides his music.

Dear lists,
It occurred to me after I posted this note on the MTNA bulletin board
that I can reach many more people by sending it here! If you or someone
you know fits this decription, or can use this offer, please don't
hesitate to take advantage of it!

"I would be happy to help any horn player needing assistance. I have a
number of standard solos and studies I can donate to a student or
teacher who has lost their library to the hurricane/floods. I can also
donate mouthpieces.

I would also be willing to give lessons to any horn students displaced
in Arkansas, and if necessary I may be able to drive to your location."

Hoping to help,
Brent

2005-09-12 Thread Paul Mansur
It has just been too long since I was there during the 300th
anniversary of the horn in Bohemia. I have no contacts left, now.
But find a few hornspielers and they'll take time to lift a few with
you.

Cheers, Paul Mansur

RE: [Hornlist] Hornists in the Czech Republic?

2005-09-12 Thread Hans
Hello Carlberg, I doubt if any professional horn player in
Brno or Prague has time to play duets or quartets with
visiting horn players from abroad, as they struggle to
survive in a society which is just business orientated & has
nothing left financially for the arts. Most of them play in
various orchestras & ensembles to compensate the exorbitant
rising living costs. Goverment provides just funds for
Prague Philharmonic (their National Philharmonic), National
Theatre (Opera) & National Museum incl. National Library.
Other institutions receive no financial support by tax
money.

By the way, the cathedral in Prague is named St.Vitus & not
St.Vitas. There is a wood carved altar of enormous cultural
importance. You have a fantastic view over Prague from the
Hradschin (the castle high above Moldavia river).

Have fun in Prague & Brno. Be aware that the Pilsen Urquell
is a strong beer.

Greetings

Hans

Re: [Hornlist] Hornists in the Czech Republic?

2005-09-12 Thread BrassArtsUnlim
Carlberg,

You may want also to contact M. Jiracek & Sons, horn makers in the Czech
Republic. Vlastimil Jiracek speaks English fairly well and is most
accomodating.
They may be able to put you in touch with people.

NHR: Enjoy your time there! I visited in '93, and Praha (Prague) is still
my favorite city in the world. You must see the Castle and St. Vitas Cathedral
(1000 years in the making!), walk the Golden Lane, Karluv Most (Charles
Bridge), Tyn church, Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock, Josefov and
the
old Jewish cemetery, etc. etc.. A wondrous place. I've heard it's become
unbelievably expensive. Too bad for that, but it's still worth it.
