Yes, I think the consensus and logical solution would be Ab bass.

Thanks to all that replied.

[Hornlist] Reminder: Horn lectures in South Dakota and Iowa

2006-09-23 Thread Stuart A. de Haro
Hello Everyone,

I just thought I'd put out a reminder that I'm going to be giving
two lectures on the Horn on September 26th and 27th, at the University
of South Dakota and the University of Iowa respectively. Here are the
dates, times, and locations.

University of South Dakota
11:00am on Tuesday, September 26th, 2006
Colton Recital Hall of the College of Fine Arts
414 East Clark Street
Vermillion, SD 57069

University of Iowa
12:30pm on Wednesday, September 27th, 2006
School of Music
Voxman Music Building
Choral Room (Rm. 1077)

If anyone wants to come listen, you are more than welcome. I'll be
talking mostly about some things that are generally not taught about
the Horn in school, and I'll also touch on the inner workings of the
Horn and brass instruments in general, as well as a bit about care and
maintenance. Each lecture will be about 50 minutes long with some Q&A
time at the end and afterwards. There's also the added opportunity to
visit the National Music Museum at USD. They have lots of very nice
instruments there to gawk at. Hope to see you there.

Re: [Hornlist] Terrorism Report

2006-09-23 Thread Klaus Bjerre
My standings on political and religious terrorism are well known by my
surroundings.

I will not out them in a horn forum.

However I am that old, that I can remember several profession and conservatory
level horn sections
playing with a level of intonation, which I considered terror towards my ears.

I very rarely hear such problems any more.

The last time I profoundly objected to the intonation of a professional
orchestral performance,
the problem was about the low strings.

Some of you may know, that I am also a recorder player. I yet have to hear a
performance of the
4th Brandenburg Concerto, where the two recorders will play their long unisono
notes totally in
tune. Everybody apparently can do the pyrotechnics. And there is at least one
"impossible" note.

But hearing the playing of plain mid-range notes being in tune, that would be a
new experience to
my ears.

Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre,
who has not performed that concerto in public

[Hornlist] Terrorism Report

2006-09-23 Thread Carlberg Jones

From my users group.

**

As people have been saying:

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 - A stark assessment of terrorism trends by
American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion
and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic
radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the
Sept. 11 attacks.

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more
direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented
either in recent White House documents or in a report released
Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several
officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who
have read the final document.

The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal
appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies
since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16
disparate spy services inside government. Titled "Trends in Global
Terrorism: Implications for the United States,'' it asserts that
Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized
and spread across the globe.

An opening section of the report, "Indicators of the Spread of the
Global Jihadist Movement," cites the Iraq war as a reason for the
diffusion of jihad ideology.

The report "says that the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism
problem worse," said one American intelligence official.

[Hornlist] re:Pros and Cons of Fully Mechanical Main Valves?

2006-09-23 Thread Leonard & Peggy Brown

subject: [Hornlist] Pros and Cons of Fully Mechanical Main Valves?

I am considering buying a Conn horn (probably some type of 10D or
11D), since I'm interested in the Geyer wrap.

One of the options I've noticed is for fully mechanical main valves.
I was curious about what the pros and cons were of this; the idea
sort of appeals to me if I understand it correctly (I remember it
being kind of annoying when the string would come loose on my Holton
H179), and apparently there isn't an additional cost for this.

Can anyone tell me what downside, if any, there would be to choosing
this option (other than the horn taking longer to be customized)?

-Justin<<

Justin,
I have no gripes against modern ball and socket valves except for one tiny
thing: I don't like the solid stop they provide at the end of the stroke.
String valves hit the corks and give a little bit but mechanical ones really
feel like they have hit a wall. I guess this isn't really much and I expect
I could learn to live with it but it is a difference.

RE: [Hornlist] Pros and Cons of Fully Mechanical Main Valves?

2006-09-23 Thread Herbert Foster
The varying mechanical advantage issue with mechanical linkages is less of a
problem with light rotors such as hollow rotors (Paxman?) or plastic (Finke).

Now let's see. If I could design a linkage with higher mechanical advantage at
the ends...
It would also hit the bumpers with less force.
