[Hornlist] Re: Experience - horn related

2007-02-20 Thread Howard Sanner

Hans Pizka clarifies:
>

I would at least have expected a nice excuse & thank
you for your care. But just: we dont need your effort as we
found the parts.

Ah, well, in that case I see your point. It wasn't clear to me
from your first post that there'd been no thanks. The profuse
thanks--not to mention grovelling--should have come when they
first asked you to fax the parts.

OTOH, my mother, who is much wiser than she gives herself credit
for being, would say "Consider the source" in such circumstances.
That sentence has given me a good perspective on a lot of things
in life.

[Hornlist] RE: Duets

2007-02-20 Thread SandyP412
Jeremy,

We have a wonderfully fun set of duets for 2 Horns called "Eight Doodles" by
Mary Ann Tilford. There is actually a ninth bonus doodle. You can find
this at
_www.pelicanmusicpublishing.com_ (http://www.pelicanmusicpublishing.com)

Hope this helps!

RE: [Hornlist] Soloist $

2007-02-20 Thread hans
If this is a professional soloist & he or she is under
management, they have to pay a minimum of 15% to the
manager, if they have a firm or act as a firm or make more
than 20.000.- a year by freelancing besides the regular
orchestra or teaching job (they have usually), they have to
pay VAT (so the rules here in the European Union) and
finally income tax. Usually one half of the fee is eaten up
by that. So the figures (well no slap in the face) dont
sound so nice.

But as I mentioned before, making up the fame of a young
talent & give this amount as "sponsorship" (no tax, perhaps,
no VAT, no manager fee), could make a very good story & if
the young soloist will make his or her way up, he or she
would not forget that big chance given by that orchestra.

I don't think the 1500-1800 you mention would be a slap in
the face. Of course travel and hotel would be a given. Maybe
some beer money too.

Ha! Knowing hornists, I would have to hold that beer money for 'after' the
performances...

Thanks, Fred

Easter is coming soon! If you are planning to play for Easter

Quartets," versions for horn quartet or mixed quartet (2 trumpets, horn
[euphonium], trombone) available from Brassworks 4 Publishing

http://www.brassworks4.com/

Also of interest, may be my previous publication, "Five Easter Trios,"
versions for horn trio or mixed brass (trumpet, horn, trombone) also
from Brassworks 4. Reviewed in HORN CALL, Oct 2006. You can read the
review on my web page,

If you want to play a solo, check out my "Variations on a Spiritual
Song" for horn and organ (piano), based on "Were You There?" This one
