We march with horns here in Canada too.

I don't think there's any such online resource. Douglas Hill has a book
called _Extended Techniques for the Horn_. It includes a CD with
demonstrations of all the techniques he writes about.

The only "members only" area per se is the file download directory
that contains the member directories, thesis library request form and
similar restricted documents. Access to many other functions of the
site, though, is limited to varying degrees.

Making entries in most of the interactive features is restricted to
members - posting marketplace ads, jobline listings, member news,
event calender entries, Service Directory ads, etc. Most entries in
those components are visible to the general public, but only members
can contribute. Other aspects are accessible to all registered users
but not the general public. All of the files you saw in the same menu
as the 2006 directory and the online member directory are members
only. BTW, the 2007 member directory is due out soon, and will be
available there first :-)

[Hornlist] Marching Band Anyone?

2007-11-01 Thread Steve Burg
Cavalcade is the name for the competition here in south central PA. It, quite
possibly, may not be different at all from your area's competitions. I do know
that there are different divisions based on the size of the marching band.

My take on it is - it's a way to get the kids in the band to feel like they
are playing a competitive team sport.

Then there is the story about Dennis Brain, which can be heard on the LP
"The Art of Dennis Brain" during his time in the RAF Band. The narrator
spoke of Brain improvising ad libbed parts to the marches they were playing
to accompany the flute part. This was done while they were on the march.

[Hornlist] Marching Bands

2007-11-01 Thread S.A.Maniscola
I found it really crazy, when the first shirt in the Air Force Band I just
joined said,"we'll be forming up outside the rehearsal hall for marching band
at 1300 hours".
Coming from the H.S. of Performing Arts, where marches were played sitting
,either in a concert band or orchestra,I was in for a very uncomfortable time.
I auditioned on horn ,they had no way of knowing of my drumming experience.I
told them I never marched with a horn, and I did'nt want to have some trombone
player smack me with his slide turning a corner .They said play horn or go to
the stockade, then I told them of my drumming ,and after a short audition,I was
in the drum line.
A close call, although I'd rather be playing the long call of Wagner!.
More power to ya ,if you can do that horn thing in a marching band.
 Ciao,
Steve
