[Hornlist] Piano Trio Transcriptions

2008-10-11 Thread Koo Kendrick

Hi everyone,

Was just wondering what other musically engaging pieces there are for the
combination of horn/violin/piano other than the Brahms and the Ligeti. (i know
there are a few others around but they are not really very good in my opinion).
Also, does anyone have experience trancribing cello parts of piano trios and
performing them? would anyone know which trios would work well after
transcription?

Cheers,
K

Re: [Hornlist] Piano Trio Transcriptions

2008-10-11 Thread Jonathan West
There is a marvellous trio for that combination by Lennox Berkeley.
Look out for the recording of it by Dennis Brain, Manoung Parikian and
Colin Horsley.

As for transcriptions of piano trios, I haven't tried to do that but
I'm sure some could be transcribed. You would have to look at the
range and agility of the cello part and decide whether the horn could
reasonably play it, or whether it could be simplified to make it
playable. Individual movements would probably be more amenable to the
treatment than whole trios.

2008-10-11 Thread David Goldberg
It's hard to beat the humongous list that Bill Melton compiled, so I
would add only that violin, horn and piano lends itself to many of a
zillion standard trio sonatas by major composers. These trii tend to be
scored for two soprano instruments, usually comprising any of violin,
recorder, flute, oboe. The horn can often play the 2nd line. Popular
composers of trio sonatas include Telemann, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel,
Stamitz, Quantz, Pezel, Loiellet, etc. et al. ad infinitum. The Vivaldi
double horn concerti and the Telemann Concerto A Tre (fl/hn/basso) are
in this arena, but dumbed down on our behalf. Get the real thing -
erase where it says 'Oboe' or 'Flute 2', and write in 'Horn in C'.

The rest? Well, other types of Alex. (503,1103,107), Engelbert Schmid

The subject heading Trios (Piano, horn, violin) will pull up
whatever original works a given library has for this combination.
Trios (Piano, horn, violin), Arranged will give you the arrangements.

There is a gorgeous transcription of the slow movement of the Brahms
piano sonata in F minor for piano, violin, and horn by Mason Jones. He
played it at the Potsdam IHS workshop, the one where he and Farkas
performed together. I've never heard of it being published, which is
too bad if true. IMHO, Jones's transcriptions are very nice.

BTW, there's also a recording of the Berkeley trio with Soren
Hermansson. You can see the catalog record for it at:

A friend of mine who worked for several years in Germany had to sell
his Paxman and buy an Alexander. Now he's back in Italy and did the
opposite ;)

I'd say that in Germany you'll be more successful with a German-style
sound. I've been told (by a top-level German hornist) that a Hans
Hoyer can also be suitable.

Re: [Hornlist] Horns

2008-10-11 Thread Jeremy Cucco
I would strongly urge you to consider Dieter Otto horns. I just
recently purchased their 180k in yellow brass (traditional Knopf-Geyer
wrap) and love it. It is quite similar in sound and build quality to
the Kuhns and actually a little less expensive - still a hand made
horn though.

My experiences so far have been beyond excellent. The horn is capable
of a very broad range of colors, the weight is perfect and it blends
well with everything (oh yeah, it buries 8Ds with ease.). I tried no
less than 20 new custom horns in one month (none at workshops - all in
private settings at various shops) and found both the yellow and gold
brass varieties of the Otto 180k to be superior or at least equal to
everything else I tried.

Make sure you have a mouthpiece with a German shank though as the
standard morse taper mouthpiece doesn't quite fit right and can make a
few notes funky. Modifying your existing mouthpiece should be easy and
cheap if it's not setup that way currently.

Cheers,
Jeremy
