That's good, Hans, I should have ordered it from you. Do you think Schubert
would mind all these different keys? Why did he pick E? There are supposed
to be certain moods associated with certain keys, but I've never really
believed that when it comes to horn playing.

I have a recording of Brain and Pears doing Auf dem Strom. I imagine it was
quite a struggle for Brain to play loud enough to match Pears. Pears sounds
like he is trying to ingest the microphone.

It sounds most brilliant in E, but is quite taxiing for the horn. But I
am sure, he would not mind listen to it when in D or C or Eb. But he
would mind, if we would NOT play this wonderful piece.

The piece is not composed with the horn in the foreground, just decent
in the back. And the miking that time when Pears DB recorded it .
There are several live recordings with DB. I just remember Holland
Festival

[Hornlist] For the hornist who has everything else

2008-12-05 Thread David Goldberg
One of my favorite practice books has recently been expanded and
reprinted. It used to be called 1000 Fiddle Tunes but its new
incarnation is Ryan's Mammoth Collection 1050 Reels and Jigs. It
makes a great practice book for those who want a dose of Kopprasch-like
exercises that are new and fun.

The tunes run a little on the high side for horn, but they fit fine when
transposed to C - which will make you compatible at holiday parties if
there is a pianist or guitarist who can improvise chords. You can use
them for near-painless transposition practice in all keys.

You can see/print three near-random pages as .gif images from the older
book at

http://orchard.wccnet.org/~goldberg/FB/

Cheap at Amazon - less than $15. You might want to have it re-bound
with spiral binding so it lies flat. It makes a nice holiday gift for a
deserving mad wag hornist, violinist, flutist...

When Mozart rearranged Händels The Messiah the art of clarino trumpet playing
had declined. Hence Mozart transferred the trumpet obligato of Sound the
Trumpet to the horn. Funny thing is that the German text is Erschallt die
Posaune (Sound the Trombone), and Mozart should have been able to find an alto
trombone player able do the trumpet part octave down at least in Salzburg. But
then I of course don’t remember where Mozart was, when he did the Messiah.

You should be able to read the trumpet part as plain horn in D. The catch will
be to find a piano arrangement of the string and continuo parts, if you can’t
snap your fingers at your servants for them to take their violins, violas,
cellos, and basses.

Find a piano arrangement of the string and continuo parts? There are lots
of copies of the piano/vocal (most often, Schirmer) score floating around,
since zillions of church choirs and amateur choral groups perform all or part
of
Handel's Messiah this time of year, and lots more people own copies that
they take to Messiah sing-alongs.

Yup, I know that, but most of those only are directed towards singers, so that
the obligato also is in the piano arrangement. Doubling piano and horn (in
octaves) on the obligato will sound like a word not suited for this list.
