Re: [Hornlist] Embouchure
I find that foods or medications that cause swelling or shrinking such as decongestants and some blood pressure medications can adversely affect the embouchure. Diuretics are particularly bad for this effect, and coffee is a mild diuretic. If I have some serious horn playing to do, I delay use of any of the above. I don't know if all horn players are affected in this way; I suspect those with embouchures that are very sensitive to mouthpiece size are likely to be affected this way. Regards, Larry _ [Jeremy Cucco wrote:] I'm actually curious to know kind if the opposite - are there things folks are aware of that adversely affect the embouchure? For example, certain coffee ruins my chops for days - it makes them sluggish and non-responsive. Also, artificial sweeteners have a similar effect. Does anyone find similarly or have some reasoning as to why? ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
Re: [Hornlist] Re: embouchure
This sounds like a helpful suggestion. Increasing blood circulation would indeed tend bring back the fatigued muscles more quickly. On the other end of the fatigue spectrum, I use isometric exercise to strengthen embouchure muscles, while driving, doing other exercise, or other activities where you won't be directly observed, as it can look pretty weird from another's point of view. As I get older (thereby losing muscle tone due to age) and also when I have insufficient time for practice on the horn itself, I look for other time-efficient ways to stay more 'in shape'. Also, I sometimes take my mouthpiece with me for exercises while driving. This is not about food, but you might enjoy looking into acupressure. There are 4 points that affect the lips, 1- just below the middle of your nose and about halfway between your nose and lip, 2- about the middle of your chin and 3 and 4 above your lip close to either end of your mouth. I've fooled around with it some from time to time and it seems to help a little, especially if your chops are fatigued. It helps to stimulate blood flow. [Hornlist] Re: Folding Horn Stands
I use the K&M folding version from Osmun. Folds flat enough to stuff in my Manhasset Concertina stand bag. http://store.osmun.com/browse.cfm/2,42.html A friend of mine has the Hercules and loves it, but it doesn't fold quite as flat as my K&M. John Wunderlin I'd appreciate any comments on the fold-up kind, which is the second listed above - I've got a second horn I want to keep out, and this is much less expensive and therefore my first choice if it works as well. Also, if anyone who has one thinks it might work for a small guitar or mandolin - I also need a stand for my mandolin. ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Lord help all of us if the Professor is a card carrying member of the Reboobigan party! Re: [Hornlist] Heinichen question
Heinichen was a fairly prolific concerto composer in Dresden. Unfortunately many of the works which you hear on CD have never actually been published. I have no particular knowledge of the concerto that you mention, but I would check Robert Ostermeyer edition, Thompson edition [the kalmus catalog], and perhaps Recent Researches in the Music of the Baroque series published by AR editions. More and more unpublished manuscripts are being published every year, but as a for instance, a majority of Telemann's compositions remain unpublished. Do you recall who the ensemble was that performed the recording that you heard? I would be interested in hearing it myself. And as a recommendation, if you like the Heinichen, try to find the Zelenka "Capriccios"- you're in for a treat if you like clarini horn parts. Paxmaha "Happy Claamsa and Merry Christmas" From: Joyce Rainwalker To: horn@music.memphis.edu Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2008 11:30:16 PM Subject: [Hornlist] Heinichen question Hi, all - I heard a piece on the satellite today and tried to track it down. Heinichen's Concerto in F major had some gorgeous horn parts. My web search yielded up a couple of versions of a CD recording, but I'm still trying to find a source for a full score. Wikipedia says that Siebel published the collection of works in 1913 but I'm not clear on who owns the catalog now. Is there a site that will help me track it down? More to the point, what's the range of the high horns? Does anyone have a copy I could see a piece of? My recent chamber orchestra concert has rendered me delusional, probably, believing that we can tackle anything with enough well-planned practice. I suspect a descant might be required, but I thought it might be worth a little more list-enhanced digging. It might be Clamsaa fog, too. Hmmm. Thanks - Joyce (who's figured out that four snow days in one week make for *lots* of extra practice time...) ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/paxmaha%40yahoo.com ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
