[Hornlist] Steve Mumford is irresistible to women

2009-06-25 Thread Brass Arts Unlimited
On the bright side, fixing horns does make =
you irresistibly attractive to women.

Or, Steve, maybe all that metal exposure just makes you BELIEVE you are
irresistibly attractive to women.

[Hornlist] RE: Brass safety

2009-06-25 Thread HornCabbage
Lawrence Y offered:

My dad worked in factory governed by similar health and safety regulations
-
the had to wear face-masks and special clothing.

On the days the inspectors came the masks and clothes were taken out of the
cupboard and the workers put them on.  As soon as the inspectors left, they
were all put back in the cupboard until next time.

*
This clearly explains why none of the cupboards
suffered the ill effects of lead poisoning.

Gotta go,
Cabbage

Rick Todd.

He was also on hand at the IHS symposium in Illinois - and socializing with
us mere mortals at Buffalo Wild Wings after hours (Geez Ken, you never did
make it out there!!). Great player, great guy!

Those of you who have seen the newest Star Trek movie probably noticed that
amazing horn solo at the beginning--anyone know who's playing?

Re: [Hornlist] Steve Mumford is irresistible to women

2009-06-25 Thread David Goldberg
Here's a case - many years ago I was playing 2nd in a production of
Camelot - you know, the triple horn concerto with cast accompaniment -
the 1st horniste was an undergrad university student, a fine player.
Toward the end of act I her 2nd valve began to stick seriously and she
was distraught. So during intermission I whipped out my kit, bared her
valve, banged on it a bit, drenched it with oil and it worked fine for
the rest of the evening, with the bearing plate and cap left off. She
was most grateful. Well, maybe not most, but grateful none the less to
be able to finish the show. As a postscript - I heard later that her
horn prof criticised me for tinkering with her valve.

So, what did the horn professor reply when you
asked him or her why she or he didn't make sure
his or her students horns were in good shape and
she or he gave his or her students instruction
about routine and emergency instrument care?

Carlberg

P.S. Who was the professor?

g-gulp. My passive-aggressive modus operandi de jour did not allow me
to pursue the transaction to that point. Better to not care what
shehehimher thought about it. Of course, that could have been different
if I had ruined her valve.

[Hornlist] Re: Star Trek question (#2)

2009-06-25 Thread Larry Jellison

In listening to the Main Theme,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmOgJ0xj38gfeature=related

at about 20 seconds in, there appears to be multiple tracks of unison horn
playing. The unison is so perfect, I wonder how this was done. Was the single
horn track dubbed back in with some electronic variation such as reverb, slight
delay, etc. Did Rick record a second unison track? If it turns out that this
was a horn section, then their unison is just incredibly good! Listen with a
good set of head phones!

BTW, the horn playing in this one minute track conveys a presence and intensity
that makes us fall in love with the horn all over again.

Larry

Personal sales, OK.
Commercial adverts, no thank you.
Most dealers seem to be very well-behaved with this respect; they
respond to posts succinctly and don't get pushy.
Do the ones who post long lists here make some contribution to the
maintenance of the list, perhaps?
