[Hornlist] Correction to Marshall Brain discography
On page 15 of the Marshall, there is a listing for the Mozart concerto no. 3, with Brain accompanied by the Nord Deutsches Rundfunk (NDR - and I'm no doubt sure to hear from Hans my unconscionable mangling of the full name which I am totally winging from memory) and Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. Well, I have just listened to a CD (Tahra 596, part of a 4 disc set of "Rares enregistrements Mozartiens 1934-1970" - you may still be able to snatch up a copy from the Berkshire Record Outlet; $27.96, but it does also have a lot of other tunes on the four discs that you may even enjoy despite their lack of major horn-related content) that has the same forces playing concerto no. 2 (K. 417) and recorded the same day (May 7, 1954) as stated in Marshall. It is possible that he played both concerti on that day, but I only see mention of one Mozart played on that particular radio orchestra concert, where he also played the Strauss 1 (another reason that I doubt that even the immortal one played two Mozarts at the same session). This Strauss is available (or at least was at one time) on the Green Hill label (CH 0016) and has a coda that will make you laugh out loud, I guarantee. DB must have been determined to prove a point (or just hated the conductor, maybe) and leaves the ensemble panting in the dust the way a comic baritone does with the ultimate encore of "A modern Major General" or some such G & S patter song. Anyhow, Peter Hirsch (now soaking up Grumiaux and Primrose playing the Andante of K. 364 on the next disc) ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

Not too easy to find, but it's very worthwhile.
