[Hornlist] Pichl

2008-06-06 Thread Christopher Gongos

Hi All

The music of Pichl is very nice. I've recorded some of his
symphonies on Naxos with The Toronto Chamber Orchestra conducted by
Kevin Mallon.

Some nice horn parts. I will have to look up the chamber music, as I
was pleasantly surprised by the orchestral stuff.

Take care.

Hello Timothy, I get the feeling sometimes, most writers on this list
care most about pieces if they include "gorgeous horn playing". I
simply

admire great music, no matter if horns are involved or not.

Recently I was watching a TV program about White House with great
horn

playing. Anybody knows about the solo player ?

Neunecker
has also recorded it.These are the two in my collection - there might be

[Hornlist] Conn 8D bell

2004-11-27 Thread Christopher Gongos
Hello Listers.

Would anyone happen to have a Conn 8D bell that they would want to part with?
I have a student who needs a bell (not just the flare, but the whole part back
to the join.) Her bell is cracking in several places, right through the metal.
Very strange. Has anyone else had this probelm with their horns?

Many thanks,

Re: [Hornlist] Mozart cadenzas

2004-09-26 Thread Christopher Gongos
Hello All,
My favourite Mozart cadenzas would have to be Michael Holtzel's, both on his
old recording and the ones that are printed in Herr Pizka's book. They are
virtuosic, musical and tasteful.

(I believe that Radovan Vlatkovic's cadenzas are based on Holtzel's as
well.)

Re: [Hornlist] Earplugs

2004-03-29 Thread Christopher Gongos
Dear Fred,

I recommend that you go to an audiologist and have proper earplugs made.
There are some available that block out the most harmful of sounds, while
the rest comes through quite well. Still not great for playing horn, as you
tend to hear more of what is happening inside your mouth than anything else,
but for the dangerous times, most worthwhile. Mine cost in the range of
$175.00 (Canadian) I believe.

Re: [Hornlist] What should I do after really hard concert orperformance?

2004-03-26 Thread Christopher Gongos
Hi Jan,

In such a situation I have had good results from taking Ibuprophen (Advil)
after a hard concert. It helps me with 'morning after the night before'
chops. Be careful though, as not everyone can take Ibuprophen as it can be
hard on the stomach.

Playing wise, take it easy and allow for a long, gentle warm up. You can
also apply gentle heat and cold, alternating to reduce swelling. And
perhaps evaluate how you can modify your playing to be easier on your
embouchure, even when the requirements of the concert are considerable.

[Hornlist] Wanhal Sinfonia

2004-01-11 Thread Christopher Gongos
Hello Listers,

A couple of weeks ago I asked for advice about a part in A-flat horn. I was concerned
that the slow movement which had a really big horn part would be SUPER high. Well...
just to let you know, turns out that the slow mvmt was horn in E-flat, and this fact
was missing from the part.

This made it very playable, only going up to a few B-flats.

Whew.

[Hornlist] Wanhal Sinfonia

2003-12-27 Thread Christopher Gongos
Hello Listers,

A question to you all.

I have to prepare a Sinfonia by Johann Baptist Wanhal. It is AE203, in A-Flat. The
second movement has a rather involved horn part... marked in Horn in A-Flat. Does
anyone know whether this should be A-Flat ALTO or BASSO?

Unfortunately I don't have a score to consult. If it is ALTO, then I will have some
high E-Flats(above high C) (written high Cs) to deal with.. YIKES!

Has anyone played this piece, or does anyone have insight into Wanhal's tendencies, as
far as range is concerned?

Many thanks,

[Hornlist] David Cripps Masterclass in Toronto

2003-02-11 Thread Christopher Gongos
David Cripps will be presenting a masterclass at the Faculty on Friday, February 28
from 3 to 5 p.m. in Boyd Neel.
DAVID CRIPPS

The British-born conductor, hornist and teacher, David Cripps, is one of the most
distinguished and experienced performing musicians and pedagogues on the scene today.

He began playing the horn at the age of fourteen, was quickly accepted into the
National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, where he became Principal Horn almost
immediately, and made his solo début in London's Royal Festival Hall, performing
Mozart's 4th Horn Concerto under the baton of Sir Malcolm Sargent.

He was awarded an Open Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he
studied horn and conducting, winning all available prizes.

There followed a succession of Principal Horn appointments - BBC National Orchestra of
Wales, Hallé Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, culminating in a ten-year spell as
Principal Horn in the London Symphony Orchestra. This period included the music
directorships of André Previn and Claudio Abbado, and included guest conducting
appearances of Bernstein, Ozawa, Böhm, Kubelik, and countless other luminaries. As
well as many solo appearances with all these orchestras, he was involved in such
diverse achievements as playing over thirty performances of Mahler's 5th Symphony with
Claudio Abbado in UK and on tours around the world, and leading the Horn Section of
the LSO in all the original soundtracks of the Star Wars and Superman movies with John
Williams.

David Cripps was Professor of Horn at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London
from 1974 to 1983, and Senior Horn Tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music in
Manchester from 1987 to 1996. He has coached and given master-classes all over the
world. Additionally he was Brass and Wind Coach for the European Union Youth
Orchestra, and was visiting Horn Coach at the Domaine Forget in Québec for three
years.

Since 1996 he has devoted more time to his conducting career - he has been Resident
Conductor of the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra and has made guest conducting
appearances with both the Royal Philharmonic and Philharmonia in London concerts, as
well as appearances in Canada, including the Windsor Symphony, Ontario. He has not,
however, relinquished his horn-playing or teaching - he made a triumphant return to
Oman in January 2002, giving a widely-acclaimed performance of the Strauss 1st Horn
Concerto, and he is in residence in Rochester, NY for the early part of 2003, as
Associate Professor of Horn at Eastman School of Music.

Re: [Hornlist] Re: Yamaha 567

2002-11-17 Thread Christopher Gongos & Virginia Gale
Hello Listers,

Actually, most of the Yamaha horns now come with an adjustable thumb
lever. I know that the 667V has had one for the past several years,
and the new 668 II has that feature as well.

All the best,

Chris Gongos

I've found that the 567, having an adjustable thumb lever, is especially
nice for younger students with small hands. It would honestly be nice if
Yamaha would extend that feature to their other horns. There are older
players out there that have small hands too.
