Re: [Hornlist] Telemann
Hi Diane. You can find the score and parts here : http://www.birdalone.com/sheet_comp_telemann.html Claude Maury. - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007 5:35 PM Subject: [Hornlist] Telemann Hi, I'm searching for the string and harpsicord parts for the G.P. Can any of you point me to a publisher, or failing that, any other way to obtain them? Thanks for your help. Re: [Hornlist] Re: BWV14 & BWV 143 (78)
I'm sorry Richard, but I couldn't ever believe such a thing. That doesn't make sense to me. Is there someone here who could ask Baumann directly because I'm afraid this is going to a very wrong way. Claude. - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Sunday, January 21, 2007 2:11 AM Subject: [Hornlist] Re: BWV14 & BWV 143 (78) I see! Baumann might have played it ON a Bb basso horn, but he plays the part as if it were IN Alto! This makes a lot of sense. The whole piece then works very well with the hand totally out of the bell, there is no need for ventle holes, and I agree a lighter embouchure makes it work well. I think Baumann then goes up to a 36th Partial, not an 18th. And would be starting the piece on the 12th overtone g2. The guys who did the BWV143 on Bb basso played the right horns, but play an octave too low! I still am having difficulty with the 4th space C# in Cantata #78 on F horn, there wouldn't have been an F basso horn where that would be a 17th overtone? Richard Burdick Wrong again, what you hear does not count playing-wise. Baumann played the aria in Bb-basso, so the highest notes be played are written high d3 for the Bb-basso horn, nothing less than the 18th partial, but sounding as g2 on the F-horn (concert c2). The shift to f# is just by the lower pitch, the baroque 430. But even the low Bb doesn=B4t make the piece easier as Bb-basso crooks tend to give rather clumsy results because of the enormous tube length of about 540 cms. The high Bb would just give enourmous resistance due to the short horn & would rather ruin the embouchure. Going up to the 24rth harmonic when using long horns (Efl, D, C-basso or Bb-basso were normal tasks then & not giving problems to the embouchure. But the players of that time played these things with extrem light embouchure & much less pressure than thought today. Did you ever get the chance to play these original horns from late baroque period ? If so, you would agree with me. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 7:55 PM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Subject: [Hornlist] Re: BWV14 & BWV 143 BWV 14 is one of my very favorite pieces and if you have not heard Baumann do you you are missing one of the best horn recordings around. Re: [Hornlist] Re: BWV14 & BWV 143
I'm not sure I understand all of this, dear Hans, and it's late, I'm back from a concert and I'm leaving early tomorrow morning, so I won't take time to go further for now. The only thing I know is that the story of Ab Koster, Knut Hasselmann and (who was the 3rd one, I can't remember) not having the right crooks for BWV 143 is absolutely true from what Knut Hasselmann told me, and I can't believe that Knut (who unfortunately is not alive anymore) would'nt have said the truth about that. Whatever, it's also true that as a natural horn player, I never bring all my crooks if I know which crooks I'm going to use, and that kind of mistake is certainly possible. I guess that when they saw the horn parts, they couldn't have imagined them being written for a B flat alto horn, and they really thought it was going to be in B flat basso. And to answer to Richard Burdick, there is a recording of that BWV 143 in B flat alto with Ton Koopman, played by Andrew Clark, Jorge Renteria and Joe Walters. About BWV 14, Baumann recorded it in B flat alto, as did Andrew Clark with Ton Koopman. One should also remember that at that time trumpet players were also playing the horn, and differences between the 2 instruments were not always as clear as nowadays. Still now, that cantata is often played by trumpet players (and sometimes on a trumpet like Susan Williams with Pieter Jan Leusink), like Jean-Baptiste Lapierre who is going to play it next month (on a horn in B flat alto) in Paris. Not many horn players can play that piece because it's simply to high for most of us. Re: [Hornlist] BWV 14
About BWV 143 recorded in B flat basso with Leonhardt (not Harnoncourt !), it's just because the horn players didn't know about what key to use, and when they arrived to the recording session, Leonhardt asked them to play it in B flat alto, but they didn't have the crook. I have heard the story from one of horn players himself. - Original Message - From: "Rogier Hendrikx" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, January 19, 2007 4:40 PM Subject: [Hornlist] BWV 14 Dear all, I've been asked to play BWV 14 (with aria in B-flat) and been wondering if alto or basso is ment. A corno da caccia is indicated in my edition (NBA). Is this a short trumpet, or the long hunting horn? Looking at the score (the notes), I find arguments for both octaves. I only know of recordings of BWV 14 played in B-flat alto, but hey, Harnoncourt recorded BWV 143 in B-flat basso. Any specialists around.? Re: [Hornlist] Albinoni
From what I know, Albinoni never wrote any horn concerto, and I would be very surprised if he did really. It's probably an arrangement from something else, but you should then try to find out what it is exactly, who arranged it, what edition, etc. Claude Maury - Original Message - From: "Bill Gross" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'The Horn List'" Sent: Saturday, January 13, 2007 2:46 PM Subject: [Hornlist] Albinoni A good friend, non-musician, suggested the Albinoni horn concerto as a work worth looking at.
