Re: [Hornlist] disrespect
Hi Mara, I suggest letting the horn professor know what's going on. When I taught at university I always presented a horn studio class at the start of the year about ensemble etiquette (complete with hand outs) and asked the students to let me know privately if there were problems within their sections that could not be resolved by the section leader. Non-collegial behaviour was definitely cause for a student's private lesson grade to be lowered in my studio. karen On 10/6/05, Mara Cushion [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Funny you should mention HIGH SCHOOL.. This is college. This is a sophomore kid disrespecting a 6th year senior in horn performance. Yeah yeah, I've been taking a long time... We are extremely limited on horns and there is no way I can fire him. There are no challenges and none can be arranged. The band director only knows of the situation from me and unfortunately hasn't heard any of the outbursts. It manages to reach all of the few rows around us and is never enough to reach the director. So I have people in front of me turning around and asking What the hell is that about? I have calmly told the 2nd horn not to worry about me and my mistakes, that those are my problems to fix, not his. I have also asked him if something was going on outside of rehearsal or if this was a problem with me and his response was, Nothing! It's fine! Of course his behavior wasn't fine, nor did it cease. He is extremely stubborn and has now been coming late to rehearsals. The director suggested holding a sectional with him to see his reaction. Well he tried to get out of it and I think he was so annoyed with being there he couldn't even focus to make the changes I asked of him. And he did claim to be doing everything I told him, which he hadn't done anything. He seems like the type to be fueled by emotions or something. He is consistently angry with me and I really don't understand why. I'm thinking it might be time to have the director talk to him. He said he would, but only when I was comfortable with him doing so. I didn't really understand that... A friend suggested that since he was acting like a child, I should talk to him like a child. And somehow I can't imagine just saying be quiet would work. I think he really needs to learn some section etiquette and that may not be best coming from me. Although I do find the idea of playing a trick on him rather amusing. ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/karen.mcgale%40gmail.com ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

After the PJBQ had played, one of the other attending brass quartets gave a series of master classes, the grandest of all being a lecture given by the tuba player concerning the proper choice of instruments as determined by dental patterns. The tuba guy talked at length about the different dental types, and had a rather large table covered with plaster molds of every conceivable type of overbite, underbite, and any other dental anomaly you could imagine. Of course, based on one's pattern, this tuba player could predict--with unerring success--the proper instrument to play, and could also soothsay as to whether you would ever achieve any resemblance of success on the one you'd already chosen. Following the big lecture, Ifor James was seen at the table, looking over all the molds, charts, statistics and handouts of scholarly discourse concerning proper instrument choice. After a long, perplexing perusal of the facts, Ifor turned to the person beside him, reached into his mouth, pulled out his false teeth and asked, Do you fink I should giff it up? I'm glad to have known him, if only through his recordings... and this story. jrc in SC ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/mistress_karen%40hotmail.com ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
