In Schubert's time, an E was markedly lower than today, so Schubert's E will have sounded differently anyway. -- Han-Wen Nienhuys - han...@xs4all.nl - http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanwen ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
Re: [Hornlist] Summer programs
Hi! I've participated a couple of times in the Czech hornclass. It's organized by a trio from the Czech Phil each year, x http://www.hornclass.cz/welcome.html I think their original intent was to train the new generation of Czech horn students, but limited amounts of foreigners and/or amateur players are welcome too. Besides the trio, they have 3 guest teachers each year: a Czech professor, a young foreign teacher, and a veteran. The class lasts a week, and every day you get a lesson from each one of them. I've done the class a couple of times and managed to have lessons with Herman Baumann, Peter Damm and Francis Orval. It's also an excellent opportunity to visit Prague; the class happens in a small city close to Prague. Re: [Hornlist] An unusual response
After twenty years of struggle (and some pretty nice high-points) with French horn, I nowadays play trombone. I used to shrug off comments of "french horn is difficult", but playing trombone has made me appreciate the difficulty of Horn. The range of trombone doesn't compare, and the posture of French Horn is totally screwed too. [Hornlist] music KV 487 online - comments welcome.
Dear horn-enthousiasts, I've made a preliminary version of the Mozart duets available online. Find it at http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanwen/public/music/duets-kv487.zip (the zip contains source files, MIDI and PDF files) Comments, bugreports welcome. The README follows: Twelve duets (KV 487) by W.A. Mozart This is a PD edition for the mutopia project (www.mutopiaproject.org) of KV 487, following the edition prepared by Otto St"osser in 1961. There are some oddities, which I corrected to my best knowledge. * No1, horn 2 ends on low e. This must be an error, the piece is in F-major, and horn 1 plays f' * No 3: slurring of the appoggiatura in measure 20 is inconsistent * No 4: uses appoggiatura in measure 20 and 21. I have substituted acciaccatura * No 7, horn 1: uses portato (slur & dot) in measure 8. This is inconsistent. * No 8: measure 35 uses a dotted half note in 2/4 time. * No 9, horn 1: measure 2 has a printing error, where a 8th note is not beamed. * Finally: the pieces are inconsistent with dynamics. In some pieces, the same dynamics are indicated for each staff separately, while in other pieces dynamics are shared between staffs. -- Han-Wen Nienhuys | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanwen ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

I think there are odd notes in this edition (I suspect printing mistakes); I will collect them and request for comments. > But you have to be careful when writing as to find the right key these > duets were intended to be played. The are not for horn in F or E-flat. > The key of the duets varies. And you must respect the Mozartian tempi Yes, I noticed some were in a stratosferic tessitura originally. Thanks for the comments. Expect to find them online shortly. -- Han-Wen Nienhuys | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanwen ___ post: [EMAIL PROTECTED] set your options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] PD edition of KV 487 ?
Dear horn-players, I want to submit a version of Mozart's Duos for French Horn (KV 487) to the mutopia project (see http://www.mutopiaproject.org/). For this, I need a version of this piece which has passed into the public domain. I currently have an edition that is transcribed by Otto Stoesser (the introductory text is marked "Stuttgart 1961"), printed by Masters Music Publications. My guess is that Masters Music publications is reprinting Public Domain music, which would mean that this score is in the PD too. Is that correct? If not, does anyone have a scan of an older edition for me? Anything unedited or printed before 1920s will probably do.
