[Hornlist] appraisal help - thank you!!

2009-03-16 Thread Jill Jaques

Thanks so much for all your help! I spoke with Paul Navarro, who has very
generously agreed to help me. My horn should be covered in the very near
future - hooray! I learned quite a bit about valuing (is that a word?) horns -
thanks again.

Jill in Seattle

(p.s. - a few of you mentioned putting the horn on my homeowner's or renter's
insurance. I had a rider for a few years that way, and it was indeed very
cheap. However, when I moved and we revisited my policies, it turns out
because I play for a living, my horn wouldn't have been covered; I needed a
different policy that was MUCH more expensive. So Clarion turned out to be
significantly less expensive than USAA. Just FYI for all you who make a living
playing the horn but don't have orchestras covering your instruments...)

[Hornlist] help with appraisal

2009-03-14 Thread Jill Jaques

Hi all -

I'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice for me:

I need to get my horn insured - a recent rash a break-ins in the neighborhood
is making me feel kinda nervous about letting my horn go uninsured this long.
Clarion wants an appraisal or a comp before they will insure it. Here's the
tricky part: I play a Lechniuk, of which there are only 20-something ever made
and they never come up for sale, and a lot of people (esp. here on the West
Coast) have never heard of them. So getting a comp or an appraisal is proving
very difficult.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas of who to get in touch with that might be
willing to provide me with a number? It doesn't have to be a formal appraisal,
just a number I can show them.

I REALLY appreciate any help y'all can offer...

Thanks!!

Jill (in Seattle)

[Hornlist] Carter Concerto

2007-11-19 Thread Jill Jaques

Really? A major American composer writes a new piece for our instrument (which
isn't exactly swimming in concerto repertoire) and we aren't interested in
hearing about the piece, the premiere, the performance?
I, for one, would love hear about someone's impressions of hearing Jamie play
the new Carter piece. Great player, great orchestra, great hall, significant
composer... anyone?___

[Hornlist] Salzburg

2007-07-19 Thread Jill Jaques
Hi all -
I may be going to Salzburg for a few weeks in August to play in a little opera
orchestra, if the financial gods smile kindly on me while I look for a plane
ticket that doesn't require me to take out a loan. To make it more worth my
while, I thought I would try to take a lesson there, and maybe get some work
done on my horn. Can anyone suggest a few names? I will (hopefully) be there
from Aug. 3-19.
I appreciate your answers!

[Hornlist] Re: Abdominal Surgery

2007-04-18 Thread Jill Jaques
I remember one of my teachers had a small book of embouchure isometrics that
might be useful to you. It had various isolating exercises that pertained to
the formation of the embouchure: pull your corners is tight for 5 seconds, 10
seconds, 15, whatever is appropriate for you, rest, repeat. Then purse your
lips for X seconds, do several reps, etc. I remember one of the exercises was
to hold a pencil between your lips both horizontally and then vertically, so
you've just got the eraser touching your lips. I'm sure there were more, but
it was a while ago, and I'm sure you could just make up some more along those
lines.
I also remember Dale Clevenger's wife, Alice Render, saying that when she and
her husband were on long flights, they would often make horn faces behind
their books. :)
Best of luck with your recovery!

would, however, like to try to maintain some of the muscle tone of my
embouchure. Any suggestions? Feel free to email me off list.

[Hornlist] Synesthesia

2007-02-22 Thread Jill Jaques
Synesthesia is when two of your senses are linked up - in Sibelius' case, sound
and color. So when he heard specific pitches, he associated them with specific
colors. I knew a horn player that had it with letters and color.
