Re: [Hornlist] Professional Cleaning?

2009-06-07 Thread Tim Kecherson
I'd like to thank everyone who helped me out with this problem. I have one
more question about this. My personal horn (the first question was about my
fiancee's horn) is in very bad shape, and is no longer lacquered at all. If
I were to get my horn fixed up and cleaned, would it be shiny again? It is
a nickel-silver Conn 8D and I'm fairly certain it has not been properly
cleaned or polished for about 15 years.

Well, I finally got pictures of the problems. The F slide doesn't hit the
bell, as I had said, but it does scrape along the Bb slide. The brace on
the F slide broke the soldering, but my camera doesn't have the resolution
to show you. The picture with the Bb slide is with the slide as far in as
it goes.

[Hornlist] Horn Parts

2009-04-18 Thread Tim Kecherson
Not sure if this has come up at all in the few years that I've subscribed to
the list, but I'll give it a go anyway. My horn is a fairly used Conn 8D, but
I have a problem with the third valve slides. On the F side, the slide has
become slightly twisted, and when I go to pull it off to snake it and grease it
it rubs against the beginning of the bell (if you don't understand this let me
know and I'll get a picture). On the Bb side, the slide is from a completely
different horn and doesn't go in all the way (again, I can get a picture, not
sure if I'm explaining properly). My question is, should I try to find
matching parts, or wait until I have saved enough money for a new horn?

Hello.

I am conducting Sleep for my high school band soon. I have been listening to

[Hornlist] Marching Instruments

2008-06-09 Thread Tim Kecherson

Hello again.

I am a member of a community band in northern New Jersey (for those of
you in the area, it is the Palisades Park Fire Department Band), which
does many parades. Last year when I joined, I was the only marching
hornist. Since I was new to the music and I cannot affix a lyre to my
horn, I had a choice of two interesting instruments to play (both
pitched in the key of F). I did not like the first one that I played.
The only way I can describe it is as a flumpet, a sort of large
trumpet pitched in F. It had horrible intonation, going sharp as I
moved up the register. The second instrument I greatly enjoy, it is a
Conn 16E Mellophonium. The intonation is much better, and the tone
(though closer to a trumpet) is almost sort of like a horn's. My
question is this: does anyone know what the first instrument was? I
would attach a link for pictures but I did not get any. Thank you very
much.

[Hornlist] Falling Apart

2008-05-14 Thread Tim Kecherson

Hello, All.

I have an interesting (and somewhat embarrassing) story to tell. I am a
senior at the local high school, and tonight was my final concert. One
of the songs we played was an adaptation of the Lord of the Rings
Symphony by Johan De Meij. At the beginning of the piece (the Gandalf
section) my horn decided it didn't like me. As I was playing a solo, my
third valve slide on the F horn slipped out and fell with a clatter to
the stage floor. I kept playing, though my mind was racing. I couldn't
get the slide again until the end of that section. I was mortified.
Has this sort of thing ever happened to one of you?

Re: [Hornlist] Falling Apart

2008-05-14 Thread Tim Kecherson
Well I must admit that it was fun being tested on my use of alternate
fingerings. I just wish it was a different sort of test... maybe the
kind where your teacher just asks you to do something on the fly (not in
the middle of a concert). One of the other downsides to this test was
that the concert was being recorded. However, it must have been a good
concert because after we were done playing (and before the applause)
someone near the front row distinctly said, Wow. That one word made
my entire day that much better.

I am sorry to bump this thread, but I am really curious about whether I
should get a new mouthpiece or not.

I have one last question for a while. Around November, I bought a
Schilke 30 mouthpiece and immediately fell in love with it. It had the
perfect rim size and depth, and it was not difficult to play. However,
in January (I think) I noticed a scratch, about an inch long, inside the
cup of the mouthpiece. How badly would this affect the tone? I think
the scratch came from someone trying to be nice by brushing out my
mouthpiece.

Well. Since I play a (rather old) Conn 8d, I suggested a used Conn 6,

Oh well. I know that Conn is a reliable company. I just wish that they

[Hornlist] Mozart Horn Concertos

2008-04-24 Thread Tim Kecherson

Hello All (again)

I have been listening to the Mozart Horn Concertos recently, as I will
be playing one of the movements (probably the second concerto, movement
III) in a June recital. I have now listened to three recordings of
these concertos, and I have an opinion-based question. I have heard a
Barry Tuckwell recording, the recording of Dale Clevenger under Janos
Rolla, and the recordings of Eric Ruske with the Scottish Chamber
Orchestra. Of those three, I like the recording with Barry Tuckwell the
least. In the second concert, third movement, it sounds like he was
pushing very hard to get the high B flat out, and I do not like his tone
quality very much. The second place recording is the Dale Clevenger
one. I think that his tone is wonderful in the second concerto, but the
first concerto (in D major) does not have the same rich smoothness.
Therefore, my favorite recording is the Eric Ruske recording. He is a
well-rounded player, and is able to put so much emotion into what he plays.

And so, my question:
Who do you think is the best player of those three?

Made in Italy

[Hornlist] Stopped horn problem and Allergy

2008-02-14 Thread Tim Kecherson
I have an intersting (although probably common) problem. My high school band
just played an arrangement of Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King with a
stopped horn entrance. My hand is large enough so that I cannot properly do
stopped horn, I need to transpose one whole step down instead of one half step.
Is there a way to get my bell throat enlarged so I can do this properly, or
are there any models of horn with a larger throat than a Conn 8D?

Also, I seem to be allergic to silver, as when I play I get green residue on
the outside of my right hand. What can I do for this?
