A friend of mine asked me about the Conn 10D but I know nothing about them. Any
thoughts about the horn, thumbs up, thumbs down?... Thanks!

Re: [Hornlist] RE: Recording

2009-07-31 Thread hornboy101
I own a H2 and love it, I have recorded many concerts, as well as audition
tapes, practice and have used it for elctroacoustic composing for gathering
sound sources. I find it very user friendly and provides DVD quality audio if
desired, or can record in various compressed (mp3) bit rates. A great device
and the ability to capture in 4 ch sound is also very handy.
As for recording horns, something that is always challenging to capture, I
find the mic placement paired with a mic stand and some creativity decent
results (in timberal quality) are eaisly achieved
My 2 cents

I use a digital Olympus voice recorder. I bought mine at Radio Shack. The
replay sound isn't the greatest, but sounds pretty good if I connect it to my
stereo or use ear phones. It's adequate to help me improve certain aspects of
my playing. For example, I used to have a bad habit of inhaling loudly through
my nose when I'd inhale. I didn't realize how distracting it was until I heard
it on a recording. I've also used it to monitor for excessive wah-wah playing.
I don't care for the wah-wah sound that some horn players seem to
intentionally cultivate. Valerie

Re: [Hornlist] Audition help!

2009-07-30 Thread hornboy101
I own the entire musicians cdrom, which has these excerpts omitted. My
university as well does not have these books on hand. As far as my teacher she
is currently away on vacation as are most of the players I know in Calgary at
the moment

Mathew,

Late I know but holidays intrude.

The Shostakovitch is to be found in Orchestra Excerpts for Horn,
Volume 2, International Music Company, New York. The Ravel appears in
Philip Farkas's Orchestral Passages for Horn from the French Repertoire.

I'm surprised that anyone going in for an audition who must be
studying with an acknowledged player has not access to this sort of
material, if not by himself, at least from his teacher.

Milton Kicklighter is dead right; when I was in the City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra it was always the unison bass clef passage that we
chose to give to any aspiring candidate. Occasionally, if we suspected
a stamina issue, we also asked for the fff Largamente section from the
same movement.

At no time, in British auditions, are the candidates notified of what
to expect in the way of sight reading. In Germany it is different; the
choice is always from the Ritzkowsky/Spach Test Pieces for Orchestral
Auditions, Edition Peters.

All the above are worth the investment.

What is this work: "Fantasie for horns and 4 ch. tape" ?

Who wrote it? When? and who is it published by?

Re: [Hornlist] "Dent" bags

I have been using a BAGS horn case for 2 years I switched from a produce case.
I would recommend them. Sturdy and functional.

Wow - I see I have opened a touchy subject.

How about this one, which says it splits the difference between a gig
bag and a hard case, although I couldn't find the exact weight
anywhere on the web page.

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gator-GL-Lightweight-French-Horn-Case?sku=545837

Having read what everyone has said, realizing that I will not be
traveling by plane with my horn (I will fly somewhere to play only in
my next life, not this one), and that I will sometimes have it in the
car alongside other potentially dangerous objects like suitcases and
my children, I think I'm am going to rule out a lightweight gig bag.
The link above, however, looks appealing. I have emailed and asked if
they could tell me exactly what it weighs.

>From what I read, a gig bag about 4 lbs. and a hard case more like 14
lbs. Neither or those is a big concern because, although I'm no
spring chicken, I'm plenty strong enough to carry two French Horns in
hard cases under one arm for a bit if I need to, as I did just the day
before yesterday. I would, however, like to protect my horn for
cheap.

I know, "light, cheap, strong - pick any two because you can't have
all three." An engineer's expression but applicable here.

If anyone actually has used Gator brand and/or the model I link to
above, I'd like to know that. The other leading contender right now
is a Pro Tec hard case, shown here for $160.

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pro-Tec-Contoured-PRO-PAC-French-Horn-Case?sku=540235

This one, for whatever reason, does not seem appealing to me:

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gator-Molded-ABS-French-Horn-Case?sku=545830

although it is less expensive than the Pro Tec.
