Re: [Hornlist] Cutiss Blake follow up

2004-11-29 Thread rjackallen
I'm sorry to hear that Curtiss has died. He wrote a lot of music
including the State Anthem. I got to know him when I lived in Anchorage from
1982 to 1985. There were several hornists that met periodically to play at
someones house, and Curtiss sometimes joined the group. There were other
opportunities to play (Symphony, Band, and shows), but he was always too
busy. For what it's worth, I also remember that he had a very young daughter
at the time and she attracted the attention of my very young step-son.

Re: [Hornlist] oil addict

Why not introduce oil to the rotors (if you must) through a plastic
soda straw being careful not to scrape stuff from the inside of the tubes?

Why is the horn configured for the valves to be operated by the left hand rather
than the right hand?

Jack, if you like, you can reply with a quote from my Fall School Open House
letter to my potential band parents. (I'm not on the horn list anymore)

Here's what I hand out to every potential band family:

"IMPORTANT: Have you SEEN these? Some department stores, warehouses and
online auctions (including Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Costco, eBay, etc.) are now
selling “instruments”. I have seen these, and I have had some terrible
experiences with them (or, actually, my students have...). These are very
cheap (and I mean CHEAP ) instruments which are generally made in Taiwan or
China, and are of a very poor quality. Among the brand names to AVOID are:
“First Act”, “Dynasty”, “Rhythm”, “Rythm”, “Parrot”, “Shinghai”, “Shanghai”,
“Berkeley”, “Lark”, “Orchid”, and “Eastern”. Many do not work at all, and
never will, because poor quality parts and workmanship were used. Don’t
believe their warranty, as the parts are not readily available, and many
problems will lie in premature wear-and-tear, which won’t be covered under
warranty. This can only lead to frustration for your child (and for band
teachers and repair techs!). DON’T BUY THESE !!!
