Dear Prof. I. M.
I shared your note A GOOD START with a good friend who is employed by the
US Government. He job requires him to work extensively with government
agencies in Europe mainly focused on former Soviet Satellites although he
does work with Western European governments as well. I forwarded it to him
last Friday and his response to me was, (to paraphrase) Yes, that's what I
run into all the time dealing with folks over there. I then had to send
him another note asking him to look at the date to which he replied
{Oh. Well, it is STILL quite believable!

German conductor Volker Hartung was about to pick up his baton for an encore
when French police, waiting outside Strasbourg's Palais de la Musique,
arrested him. The February 22 raid, in which 15 members of the Cologne New
Philharmonic were taken into custody, followed allegations that Hartung had
been
illegally employing musicians from eastern Europe without work permits.

From the International Musician, the monthly newspaper of the AFofM: French Police Arrest German Conductor at Concert German conductor Volker Hartung was about to pick up his baton for an encore when French police, waiting outside Strasbourg's Palais de la Musique, arrested him. The February 22 raid, in which 15 members of the Cologne New Philharmonic were taken into custody, followed allegations that Hartung had been illegally employing musicians from eastern Europe without work permits. The operation followed a police raid last October on another of Hartung's concerts in Nice, according to The London Guardian. He was released after two nights in prison. On February 28, however, Germany's orchestra union, which represents 13,200 musicians, joined in the attack, claiming Hartung was cheating Germans out of jobs at a time when many German musicians were unemployed. What he does is shameless exploitation, Gerald Mertens, the union's director, said. The problem is that he is operating in a grey area. French police confirmed that the conductor had been arrested on suspicion of illegal activity. He has been banned from performing again in France until further notice, a police spokesman said.
