Re: [Hornlist] Good Mouthpiece for a Beginning French Horn Player

2004-09-10 Thread Wilbert Kimple

I guess I'm odd man out on this one.

After more than thirty years of teaching, I've
settled into the Holton DC and the Bach 3 as my
beginning mouthpieces of choice.

Both are deeper than what others have mentioned,
and both have thinner rims, too. The Bach 3 rim
seems a bit strange, at first, but the results are
good. Highly under rated.

I also like the old Conn 7BN, not the more common
7BW. Again, it has a narrow rim. Glad to know
it's still being made. Thanks Dave!

[Hornlist] Good Mouthpiece for a Beginning French Horn Player

2004-09-09 Thread sinfonian
Everyone

I tried to search the archives and could not find an answer for this
question.

I purchased a used Yamaha Single French horn for my son (fifth grade) and
have been working with him on it. I would like to get him a new mouthpiece
(the Yamaha 30C4) has a few nicks and the shank is dented but I am not sure
what is a good one for a 10 year beginning French horn player. I have also
wrote a note for him to give to his band director on his first day of
lessons next week, but thought I would also get opinions from this group.

If he played Tuba I would know where to start.

Thanks

David C. Ellis

The MP of choice around HERE for beginners is the Holton Farkas medium cup
MP. Most music stores carry this one.

[Hornlist] Good Mouthpiece for a Beginning French Horn Player

2004-09-09 Thread Brent Shires
David,
The mouthpieces I usually recommend for a beginner are:

Conn 2
Holton Farkas MDC
King H-2 (no longer in production)

I stay away from Giardinelli, Bach, and custom mouthpieces. After a
couple years of successful playing, I will usually switch students to
something with a thinner, less rounded rim and a deeper cup, like

Conn 5N
Holton Farkas VDC
Stork C8

I hope that helps -

An addendum to Brent's posting:

Conn (now part of Conn-Selmer) mouthpieces are no longer in production as a
separate brand. The brand is now CKB (Conn-King-Benge), which are made in
Germany. The current model numbers are intended to correspond to the old
numbers. The rim, cup, throat, and backbore are intended to remain as before, but
the exterior shape, weight, and weight distribution of the CKB line is
completely different from old models. In horn mouthpieces, the H2 is in production,
but the 5BN is not. The complete list includes 2, H2, 5BW, 6G, 7BN, 7BW, 11,
and 12.

Around here (Baltimore/Washington) many teachers (elementary, secondary, and
post-secondary) I know use and have tremendous success teaching quality
players using the Yamaha 30C4.
