Hi Ben,

I'm currently doing three weeks of "Secret Garden".
Don't worry about this one ... it's "sight-readable"
but it does have lots of #'s and b's.

BTW, it's beautiful music and a great story.

[Hornlist] Horn parts for Secret Garden Opera and Sondheim Funny thing HOTWTH Forum

2009-08-25 Thread Benjamin Irvine-Scott
Hello Fellow list members,

I am performing the solo horn parts/books for the North Dakota State
productions this spring for both the Opera and Musical programs.

If anyone has experience performing either of these 2 works or knows how I
can get a hold of the horn books/parts for these I would
really appreciate knowing.

Again, the opera is the "Secret Garden" and the musical is Sondheims - A
Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum.

Cheers to all!

[Hornlist] Horn Parts

Tim, as I said before, get the F slide resoldered and realigned, and replace
the Bb slide. All very simple stuff for any competent repair tech.

Re: [Hornlist] Horn Parts

2009-04-21 Thread Ben Reidhead
I think part of the problem may be that that is NOT a 3rd-valve Bb slide on for
a Conn 8D of any vintage.  It is certainly a replacement, and probably from an
Olds horn if I had to guess.

It might be worth trying to find an 8D slide and see if that solves the
problem.

If you like this horn, it's well worth having the parts fixed. The problem
with your F side slide is a very common one, and is usually caused by 2
factors: constantly pulling the slide at an odd angle, and leaning forward
over your horn to access the music on the stand. This can usually be
remedied with proper application of heat and pressure. It's not a difficult
fix. The Bb slide should be either modified or replaced. It's not likely
the cost to fix this is more than it's worth, especially if you like the
horn otherwise.

Re: [Hornlist] Horn Parts

2009-04-18 Thread James Maddrey
I had a simular problem with the third valve slide on the Bb side of my
Conn 8D.
I purchased it from a pawn shop about fifteen years ago for a song and
a dance.
Valve slides were sticking, a string was broken, and the cosmetic
condition was
terrible. At that time I didn't what Conn 8D Constellation was, I just
wanted to
play a horn. (This was a series L horn.) Needless to say, I spent
many hours

dissembling slides, rotors, corks, strings, removing corrosion etc.
To fix the problem slide I grasped the valve section with one hand and
the part of
bell showing scrape marks with the other hand and gently pulled and
tested.
When that didn't work I tried again with more force. I tried several
more times,

each time gently increasing force until the slide pulled freely.
I took a chance and won. If there had been a loose strut or solder I
might have cause

more damage.
My music teacher thought that some school kid had placed a book or too
much music

in the case.

Re: [Hornlist] Horn Parts

2009-04-18 Thread David Crane
Tim--if you like the horn, take it to a competent repair person, have them
cut a small part off the lower leg of that slide (put the cut off part
back in the slide tube), and there you go. If the repair person is not
familiar with this, find another one! They should be able to fix you up
with a matching slide also.

There are lots of Theatre Orchestra arrangements out there with only
two horn parts. Many are adaptations from originals with four parts.
