[Hornlist] Marching Band Again (sigh......)

2003-11-04 Thread Wilbert Kimple
Please pardon the double posting.

Well gang, South Carolina has hit a new low in free public education.

From the Greenville News, Greenville, SC November 4, 3002.

The entire music budget for Blue Ridge High School, Choir and Band, as given by state
funds and the local school board is $5,389.

The rest of the $60,000 Band Budget comes from a student Music Fee of $150 per band
member, plus additional fund raising. The band, which just won the State's AA
marching championship, has 140 members.

And so it goes.

Still looking for some place Marilyn (an 8D driver) and I can to move to. Any
suggestions appreciated.

2003-11-04 Thread Christopher Bonner
Ughhh. Do not get me started on marching band. We have bands in Florida
that charge students close to $1,000 to be a member of the band. All this
money spent of choreographers, and show designers, and marching staff, and
dance staff. The shame of it is, these kids would not know a Mozart
symphony if it were wrapped around a brick and hurled at their heads. But
administrators like winners and bands that bring home trophies are
winners in the eyes of those who do the hiring and firing. I could go on
and on, but Dr. Bentley Shellahamer of Florida State University wrote an
article that begged music educators to make sure that their priorties were
inline with what is in the best educational interests of their students.
Read that article and see how entirely messed up some of our priorites are.
Nothing I can say will equal the power of Dr. Shellahamer's words.
Sincerely,
Christopher Bonner
