[Hornlist] Re: natural horn rental

“I've been playing it on my modern horn (in Eb), as if it were a natural
horn, but it would be really neat if I could get my hands on a real
natural horn for the recital (and a bit before so I can practice with
it). Idaho is the anti-culture center of the world (and our campus
currently does not own a natural horn), so does anyone know of any way I
can rent a natural horn from someone/someplace nearby?

Also, if I can't find one, what suggestions do people have for making a
modern horn feel/sound more like a natural horn (I know it won't sound
the same, but even a little closer would be better than nothing). I've
heard that removing all unnecessary slides helps, is this true?

Thanks,
Heather”

Response:

I am quite fond of Idaho, I drive through a couple of time each summer it
seems there are some nice places, but maybe not Eastern Idaho.
I know of a natural horn with crooks for sale Lowell Greer always seems to
have one for sale too. Contact me off list.
If you can’t find one for your recital, I don’t think removing the valves
does anything, except clue the audience in to the fact that you don’t have
valve pipes, which is a good idea. I did quite a lot with a single F horn
without the valves before I got a Jurachek (sp?) hand horn, only to learn
that the bore of those horns just isn’t correct for a true copy. My hand
isn’t correct either; it is in general bigger than the average hand size of
200 years ago. The key is that a true natural horn will be of smaller bore
size and more gradually tapered throughout the horn. Fewer slides means
there can be less straight sections of tubing. But there are many varieties
of old horns.
For a recital I played this Summer I did play a natural horn work on my
valve horn, but changed my mouthpiece to my sheet metal one. This makes a
big difference for me, it evens the colour out . . .

[Hornlist] Re: Natural Horn

2007-06-26 Thread Marc Gelfo
Hi Robert,

You've got a natural horn sitting right there with you now -- your modern
horn, conveniently crooked in keys from B basso to Bb alto!

This article talks about basic technique and the hand positions you need to
learn:
http://www.compositiontoday.com/articles/natural_horn.asp

Once you have figured out scales and can get the notes well you can work up a
slow movement of a Mozart concerto or something. For some people this comes
naturally -- in a matter of minutes after being introduced to the concepts,
they can play diatonic melodies. Others it may take a few days of practice to
understand.

For your performance, you might choose the Beethoven horn sonata. It's
relatively easy, both for the chops and for the hand (few difficult notes), and
since it is written for horn in F it is trivial to convert from your modern
horn knowledge to your growing feel for the natural horn.

If you are really set on playing a valveless horn for the 18th century society
ball, you could always get a cheap used single horn and have a repairman
perform a valvectomy.

Hope this helps.
Marc

Here in Sweden I'm involved in a 18'th century society, that annually hosts
balls and other fun events. There's always a concert on these occasions, and
being a hornplayer, I'd love to contribute by playing something on a natural
horn. Unfortunately natural horns are expensive, hard to borrow, and noone
I've talked to is able to give lessons on how to play it. Then there's the
question of repertoire. I'm an amateur myself, and though I've had the
pleasure of playing many great works, I'd need something that didn't require
 being a virtuoso.

Any suggestions of repertoire, or maybe some tips on where to look?

 Regards,
 Robert Behrer

If you click on vhorn.GIF, you will see a real instrument that I heard

able to see it.

they happen.

I'm looking for a natural horn mouthpiece. My school has 4 Lowell Greer
natural horns but they never did buy mouthpieces for them. They have a
narrow
bore, so I was thinking that some sort of Viennese style horn would be
appropriate?

If so, where can I purchase one?

Didn't John Wunderlich record it. Or was that which broke his recorder?
